Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) GPA Calculator

UTAR grades coursework on a 4-point, marks-based scale administered by the Division of Examinations, Awards and Scholarships (DEAS) -- the same scale applies to Foundation, Undergraduate, and Postgraduate students alike. Each course grade is a fixed function of the marks obtained (see the Grade Scale Reference above); there is no curving or class-relative adjustment.

This is UTAR's current scale, in force for the January 2010 intake onwards (an earlier, slightly different scale applied to intakes before that date, including a now-discontinued D grade). Under the current scale, C (50 marks) is the lowest passing grade -- everything from 0 to 49 marks is graded F.

UTAR computes a per-trimester GPA and a cumulative CGPA, both built from "Quality Points":

• Quality Point of a course = its Grade Point x its credit hours.
• GPA = sum of Quality Points earned in a trimester / sum of credit hours attempted that trimester (excluding courses with no GPA contribution).
• CGPA = sum of Quality Points earned across all trimesters / sum of credit hours attempted across all trimesters (same exclusions).

Worked example from UTAR's own page: Quality Points 9+12+12+9+12 = 54, over 15 total credit hours, gives a GPA of 54 ÷ 15 = 3.6000.

MBBS students have their GPA computed only from courses in the First Professional Examination (Year 1), Second Professional Examination (Year 3), or Final Professional Examination (Year 5).

Excluded from GPA/CGPA entirely: courses graded PS (a pass-only administrative grade with no grade point), courses graded P where the course was not completed (an incomplete-status marker), and exempted courses (e.g. credit-exemption from an external transfer, which carries no grade).

UTAR's own pages do not publish a formula for converting a CGPA figure to a percentage -- there is no official UTAR equivalent of a "CGPA × 25"-style rule.

UTAR formally recognises an academic-standing system with statuses including "normal" and "probation" -- DEAS's own Honours List and Supplementary Examination materials refer directly to students being "elevated ... from probation status ... to normal status." UTAR's publicly available DEAS pages describe this status system by name but do not publish the specific CGPA/GPA threshold that places a student on probation, so no number is given here.

Repeating (or resitting) a failed course works primarily through the Supplementary Examination, effective from the October 2023 trimester: a second attempt at the same standard and duration as the original Main Examination, given to Foundation and Undergraduate students (full-time or part-time) who failed a course, regardless of the GPA they obtained, on the Board of Examiners' recommendation. The mark and grade awarded for a passed Supplementary Examination is capped at 50 marks / Grade C -- a full Grade C, not the higher grade a student's actual paper might otherwise deserve. It costs RM100 per failed course.

The Supplementary Examination is not available to Postgraduate students, to MBBS/Nursing/Physiotherapy professional or exit examinations, to students who instead sat a Replacement Examination, to students barred from the Main Examination, or to students who failed a course's compulsory-pass continuous-assessment component.

UTAR does not publish one single, separately stated "minimum CGPA to graduate" sentence. What its own Classification of Degree pages show is that every one of UTAR's degree-classification tables starts its lowest band at a CGPA of 2.0000 -- whether for Undergraduate programmes before January 2011, Undergraduate programmes from January 2011 onwards, or MBBS programmes from May 2010 onwards. No classification is printed for a CGPA below 2.0000 in any of these tables, which is the closest thing to a stated graduation floor in UTAR's own published material.

UTAR classifies undergraduate degrees by CGPA. The bands changed with the January 2011 intake:

(Students who entered before January 2011 are classified instead as First Class 3.5000–4.0000, Second Class Upper 3.0000–3.4999, Second Class Lower 2.2000–2.9999, or Third Class 2.0000–2.1999. MBBS students from May 2010 onwards use the same numeric bands as the current UG scale, labelled Degree with Distinction / Degree with Merit / Degree.)

President's List (semester GPA ≥ 3.8500) and Dean's List (semester GPA ≥ 3.6000) both require minimum registered credit hours (12 full-time / 9 part-time in a Long Trimester, 6 in a Short Trimester), no grade "C" or below, and no barred or repeat courses -- a student can be on only one of the two lists at a time. The Academic Improvement List instead recognises students who raise their GPA by at least 1.0000 from the previous trimester (while achieving at least 2.0000 in the current one), or who move up from probation to normal standing. A Book Prize goes to graduates with the top classification tier, and MBBS students can additionally earn a Certificate of Merit for a final mark of 70 or above in a Professional Examination.
