Laurier uses a 12-point letter-grade scale, from A+ (12 points) down to F (0 points). Where letter grades are derived from percentages, Laurier's standard conversion table applies unless the instructor announces a different conversion in writing at the outset of the course — see the Grade Scale Reference above for the full table.

Grade points are set for a 1.0-credit course; for a 0.5-credit course the grade point earned counts for half the weight, and for a 0.25-credit course, a quarter of the weight. For example, a student earning an A (11.0) in a 1.0-credit course, a C- (2.0) in a 0.5-credit course, and a B+ (2.25) in a 0.25-credit course would have a GPA of 8.71 (15.25 grade points divided by 1.75 credits).

Two transcript symbols besides F also carry 0 grade points in the 0-49% range: XF, when a required final exam or assessment isn't written (the grade is based on term work with a 0 entered for the final), and DR, when a course is dropped after the drop deadline but before the exam period. Both function as a failing grade for GPA purposes.

Your GPA is the sum of each course's grade points weighted by its credit value, divided by your total credits. GPAs are rounded to two decimal places.

Repeating a course: the grade from your second attempt is what counts toward your GPA. The first attempt stays visible on your transcript but is not used for credit toward your program. Students in degree programs may repeat courses up to a maximum of 2.0 credits total. Note: special averages calculated for distinctions do not follow this practice.

If a required final exam or assessment isn't written, the course grade is calculated by assigning a 0 on the final exam — an instructor may also require the final exam be taken at all to pass the course.

In a General BA/BSc degree program, you need an overall GPA of 4.00 to progress and graduate. If your cumulative GPA falls below 4.00 but stays at 2.00 or above, you're placed on academic probation for your next 4.0 credit attempts.

• To clear probation, you must raise your cumulative GPA to at least 4.00 by the end of that probationary period.
• If you don't clear it within 4.0 credit attempts, you get one additional term; failing to meet the requirement after that means you are required to withdraw from the university.
• If your cumulative GPA falls below 2.00, you must withdraw from the university outright.
• While on probation in a General degree program (Faculty of Arts, Human & Social Sciences, Liberal Arts, or Science), you're limited to a maximum of 2.0 credits per term.

Honours-subject students progress year to year at a GPA of 4.00 (C-) overall; Faculty of Arts Honours students additionally need a major GPA of 5.00 to proceed into year 4 of the major.

A General BA/BSc degree (without designation) requires an overall GPA of 4.00 to graduate.

An Honours BA requires a GPA of 5.00 overall and 7.00 (B-) in the honours major to graduate in that major.

Undergraduate students in a degree-seeking program are eligible for the Dean's Honour Roll if they achieve a minimum overall GPA of 10 (A-) across all courses taken from September 1 to August 31. Assessment happens in the following Fall term, by the Faculty the student was most recently registered in.
