York University GPA Calculator

York University grades undergraduate courses on a 13-grade letter scale, from A+ down to F, effective 1 September 2023 under the Senate-approved Policy on York University Grading Schemes. The scheme runs A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, F, with a documented percent range attached to each letter and a grade point on a 0.00–4.00 scale (A+ = 4.00, capped, not above). This policy applies to every undergraduate degree program in every Faculty at York, and replaced an older, pre-2023 undergraduate scheme.

Two grading options sit outside the letter scale: the Pass/Fail grading option lets a student take a graded course ungraded, with the result excluded entirely from GPA; Credit/No Credit courses are offered ungraded only, and a failing result there counts as zero in the GPA.

York calculates three related averages: the Grade Point Average (GPA), assessed at the end of an academic session; the Sessional Grade Point Average (SGPA), the weighted average for a single session; and the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), the weighted average across every session taken. All three are calculated from the same letter-grade point values.

A course taken under the Pass/Fail grading option does not affect any of these averages. A Credit/No Credit course does count toward them — specifically, a failing result in a Credit/No Credit course is entered as zero in the GPA calculation.

York recognizes five categories of undergraduate academic standing, assessed after each Fall/Winter and Summer session:

• Good Academic Standing (Honours Progression) — CGPA of 2.00 or above.
• Good Academic Standing — CGPA of 1.70 or above.
• Academic Warning — CGPA below 1.70.
• Required Withdrawal for One Year — for students who do not meet the conditions of Academic Warning; withdrawal for one year or three consecutive terms.
• Debarment for Two Years — for students who fail to meet the conditions placed on them after returning from Required Withdrawal.

A student placed on Academic Warning (CGPA below 1.70 after 18 credits taken at York) may continue on warning as long as each subsequent Sessional GPA (SGPA) is 2.00 or greater, until CGPA returns to 1.70 or above. If SGPA falls below 2.00 while on warning, the student is required to withdraw for one year (three consecutive terms) — though a student may still enrol in summer courses during that period, and returning to good standing (1.70 CGPA) by the end of the summer term allows continued enrolment the following Fall/Winter. On return from a required withdrawal, a student is placed on debarment warning: continuing requires SGPA of 2.00 or greater until CGPA reaches 1.70 or above again; falling below that a second time results in debarment from the University for two years (six consecutive terms), after which the student must reapply.

Eligibility to continue in an Honours degree program is checked at two credit milestones. After 53 earned credits: a CGPA at or above 2.00 continues in Honours in good standing; a CGPA between 1.70 and 1.99 continues on warning for a 30-credit reviewing period, reassessed at 83 earned credits; a CGPA below 1.70 exits the student from Honours into a 90-credit degree program. After 83 earned credits: a CGPA at or above 2.00 continues in Honours in good standing; below 2.00, the student is exited from Honours into a 90-credit degree program. Individual academic programs may set additional, stricter requirements (e.g. major-GPA minimums) on top of these University-wide floors, subject to Faculty- and Senate-level approval.

Students admitted to York with transfer credit are not assessed for Honours-progression eligibility until they have earned at least 12 credits at York itself — the University's stated fairness safeguard so a transfer student's Honours standing isn't judged on credits earned elsewhere.
