How grading works at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU)

TMU uses a letter-grade system on a 0.00–4.33 scale — A+ is the top grade, worth 4.33 grade points. Final course grades are assigned as one of thirteen letter grades from A+ down to F, each tied to a fixed percentage band (for example, A+ is 90–100%, B is 73–76%, D- is 50–52%).

The minimum passing grade is D- (0.67 grade points, 50–52%): a course only counts toward program and graduation requirements if a student achieves at least a D-, or a higher grade where a program's Standing Variation requires it.

How TMU calculates your GPA and CGPA

Your grade point average is the sum of each course's weight multiplied by its grade points, divided by the total course weights, then rounded to the second decimal place using normal rounding rules (a 2.879 rounds to 2.88; a 2.874 rounds to 2.87) — unlike some universities that truncate, TMU rounds.

TMU reports two GPAs: your Term Grade Point Average (TGPA), covering the current term, and your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), covering your entire academic record in the program. Single-term courses normally carry a weight of 1.00; multi-term courses normally carry a weight of 2.00.

What GPA you need to graduate from TMU

You need a minimum CGPA of 1.67 and a clear or probationary academic standing to be eligible for conferral of your credential, alongside completing all Senate-authorized program curriculum requirements.

Graduate with a CGPA of 3.50 or higher and TMU records the distinction "With Distinction" on your transcript and graduation award document.

Academic standing at TMU: Clear, Probationary, and Required to Withdraw

Clear standing requires a CGPA of at least 1.67. Probationary standing is assigned for a CGPA between 1.00 and 1.66 (or a Standing Variation shortfall); students on probation must reach a term GPA of at least 1.67 by the end of that term under a mandatory Probationary Contract, or they are assigned Required to Withdraw (RTW).

RTW is also assigned outright for a CGPA below 1.00 (except in a student's very first term). RTW carries a 12-month (3-term) suspension, after which a student may apply to return, including through the two-term "Fresh Start" Student Success Program.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at TMU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at TMU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
What does TMU exclude from your GPA?

Several transcript designations carry no grade points and never enter the GPA calculation: Audit (AUD), Challenge Credit (CH/CHG), Transfer Credit (CRT), Incomplete (INC), Withdrawn (WDN), and the Emergency Grading credit designations CRD/CRV and NCR, among others — Policy 170(A) states explicitly that Emergency Grading credit "will not be included in the calculation of the GPA."

Two designations that do count, at zero grade points like an F: F-S (Failure – Supplementary, a marginal fail eligible for a redeemable supplemental exam) and FNA (Failure for Non-Attendance).

What is the lowest passing grade at TMU?

D- (0.67 grade points, 50–52%) is TMU's lowest passing grade for course credit. A higher grade may be required in programs with an Academic Standing Variation.

What CGPA do you need to graduate from TMU?

A minimum CGPA of 1.67, plus a clear or probationary academic standing. Graduating "With Distinction" requires a CGPA of 3.50 or higher.

Source: Policy 170(A), Sections 10.1, 10.3 — verified Aug 2026

Does TMU round your GPA?

Yes — TMU rounds to the second decimal place using normal rounding rules (2.879 → 2.88, 2.874 → 2.87). This is a genuine round, not a truncation.

What happens to your GPA if you repeat a course at TMU?

Only your most recent attempt's grade counts toward your GPA, even if it's lower than an earlier attempt — but every attempt still shows permanently on your transcript, and you can repeat a course at most twice more (three attempts total).

Is Toronto Metropolitan University the same as Ryerson University?

Yes. Ryerson University was renamed Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) — the Board of Governors approved the change April 26, 2022, and it became legally effective December 8, 2022 upon Royal Assent. All current academic policies, including grading, are published under the Toronto Metropolitan University name.
