Seneca Polytechnic GPA Calculator

Seneca Polytechnic grades courses on a percentage basis throughout the term; at the end of the term your course percentage converts to a letter grade on a 0.0–4.0 scale, with A+ capped at 4.0 (not a 4.3-point scale). Both A+ (90–100%) and A (80–89%) carry the maximum 4.0 grade points, even though they're separate letter grades.

Unless a course syllabus states otherwise, the minimum passing grade is a D (50–54%, 1.0 grade point) for certificate, diploma, advanced diploma, graduate certificate, bachelor's and honours bachelor's courses. Master's degree courses set a higher bar — a minimum passing grade of B, unless the syllabus states otherwise.

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated by dividing the total points earned by the total units of credits attempted — points come from multiplying each course's grade-point value by its assigned units. Seneca provides three GPA figures: a Term GPA (all graded courses in a single term), a Cumulative GPA (all completed graded courses across your studies), and a Program GPA (all successfully completed graded courses required for your specific program).

Repeating a course: if you repeat a course, the highest grade achieved counts as the grade of record and is what's calculated into your program GPA — but every attempt still appears on your transcript, and all grades count toward your term and cumulative GPAs.

Several transcript designations — AEG, ATT, AUD, CTC, DNC, EXM, EXC, SAT, TC, UN, WD, and *** (officially withdrew) — are noted on your transcript but do not affect your GPA at all.

Seneca issues an academic standing at the end of every term:

• Good — term GPA of 2.0 or higher (2.5 for bachelor's programs, 3.0 for master's programs) and no failed courses in the term.
• Satisfactory — term GPA of 2.0 or higher (2.5 / 3.0) with two or fewer failed courses.
• Probationary — term GPA below 2.0 (2.5 / 3.0), or three or more failed courses.
• Withdrawn — may be assigned after two consecutive terms without satisfactory standing.

Students start every program in Good standing. If you're required to withdraw for academic reasons, you may be eligible for readmission after a minimum of one semester, but you'll need to meet probation requirements to continue once readmitted.

To progress in a certificate, diploma, advanced diploma or graduate certificate program you need a minimum term GPA of 2.0; bachelor's programs need 2.5; master's programs need 3.0 — though your program area has discretion to let you continue below the floor.

The minimum graduating GPA depends on your credential:

• 2.0 — certificate, diploma, advanced diploma, graduate certificate
• 2.5 — bachelor's degree, which must also include a minimum 2.5 GPA in your main field of study and a minimum 2.0 GPA in breadth courses
• 3.0 — master's degree

At graduation, diploma, certificate, bachelor's and master's students earn Honours standing with a graduating GPA of 3.6 to 3.9, and High Honours standing with a graduating GPA of 4.0.

During your studies, the President's Honour List recognizes full-time students (and students with an equivalent full-time accommodation through Accessible Learning Services) who achieve a term GPA of 4.0. Continuing Education students qualify with a term GPA of 4.0 across a minimum of four courses over three consecutive terms.

Courses in a program may be accounted for through transfer credits, prior learning assessment and recognition, exemption, or course substitution. Two related transcript designations exist: TC (Transfer credit) and CTC (Conditional transfer credit) — neither affects your GPA calculation.
