How grading works at IIUM

IIUM grades every undergraduate course on a fixed percentage-to-letter scale, from A down to F, each letter carrying a set grade point (A = 4.00 down to F = 0.00) that is applied the same way in every course — there is no curving or class-relative adjustment involved.

Each letter grade also carries a per-course Pass/Fail status: grades from A down to C are treated as a passing course result, while D, D-, E and F are a failing result for that course — a separate concept from the CGPA thresholds for academic standing described below.

Two Kulliyyahs (faculties) run an entirely different, non-GPA system: Kulliyyah of Medicine and Kulliyyah of Dentistry grade coursework on a Pass-with-Distinction / Pass / Fail basis by exam phase, with no grade points at all — these two clinical programmes do not have a CGPA in the ordinary sense this calculator represents.

A few special grade notations carry no grade point and do not affect GPA/CGPA: P/PA (pass in a pass/fail course), RPT (the lower grade in a repeated course), I (incomplete), IP (in progress), W (withdrawn), AU (audited), and EX (exempted/credit-transferred). A Y grade — given when a student fails to fulfil an additional course requirement such as attendance — is treated as equivalent to an F for GPA purposes even though it is recorded as its own notation.

How IIUM calculates GPA and CGPA

IIUM reports a semester GPA and a cumulative CGPA, both credit-hour weighted on IIUM's 0.00-4.00 grade-point scale:

  • GPA is the sum, across a semester's registered courses, of (credit hours × grade point), divided by the total credit hours registered that semester.
  • CGPA is the same calculation across every semester of study to date, divided by total credits registered — counting only courses within the student's approved programme requirements.

IIUM's own regulations do not publish an official CGPA-to-percentage conversion formula — unlike some universities, there is no stated rule for translating a CGPA figure back into an equivalent percentage.

Probation, dismissal, and readmission at IIUM

Good academic standing requires a CGPA of 2.00 or above.

Academic probation applies when a student's CGPA falls between 1.67 and 2.00 (1.67 ≤ CGPA < 2.00). A student on probation is capped at a maximum academic load of 18 credits for that semester.

Academic dismissal follows if: the CGPA falls below 1.67; a student on probation fails to bring their CGPA back to 2.00 or above; or a student is placed on probation for a third, non-consecutive time during their studies. Kulliyyah of Medicine and Dentistry students are additionally dismissed if they exceed the maximum allowable duration for their programme's phases.

Readmission after dismissal is available once, to a student with no disciplinary misconduct and a CGPA of at least 1.00 at the time of dismissal, subject to the Dean's approval and the Centre of Studies judging the student capable of completing their studies within the maximum allowable period. A readmitted student must reach a CGPA of at least 2.00 by the end of their readmission semester or face dismissal again; readmission must be applied for within two regular semesters of the dismissal.

What you need to graduate from IIUM

IIUM's regulations do not print a fixed minimum CGPA to graduate. Instead, graduation is credit- and curriculum-based: a student's own Centre of Studies (Kulliyyah) evaluates completion of the programme's course and credit requirements and recommends the student to the university's Senate Graduation Committee, which verifies and endorses the graduation list.

This is separate from the CGPA 2.00 "good academic standing" threshold and the 1.67 dismissal threshold described above, which govern standing during study rather than the degree-conferral bar itself — IIUM's document does not state graduation eligibility in CGPA terms.

Dean's List and Rector's List at IIUM

Dean's List. Awarded each semester to a student who achieves a semester GPA of 3.50 or above, has registered for at least 12 credits (or their equivalent) that semester, and has passed every course taken.

Rector's List. IIUM's highest academic distinction at graduation: awarded to a student who achieves a final CGPA of 3.50 or above and completes their degree within the prescribed study period.

How transferred credits work at IIUM

Treatment differs by where the credits come from:

  • From another institution, same qualification level (Horizontal Credit Transfer): up to 75% of the programme's total credit-hour requirement can be transferred, subject to the Centre of Studies' approval, provided the course was passed with a good grade, is at least 80% equivalent in curriculum, and comes from an accredited programme.
  • From another institution, a lower qualification level (Vertical Credit Transfer): up to 30% of the total credit-hour requirement can be transferred, under the same approval conditions.
  • Credits transferred from outside IIUM are recorded with an EX (Exempted) grade, which carries no grade point and does not affect GPA/CGPA — it counts only toward total credits completed.
  • Credits transferred within IIUM (from the Centre for Foundation Studies or Pre-Sessional programmes) keep their original course grade, which does count toward GPA/CGPA in the new programme.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at IIUM?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at IIUM?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
What CGPA do you need for good academic standing at IIUM?

A CGPA of 2.00 or above. Below that, a student enters academic probation (1.67 up to 2.00) or, below 1.67, faces dismissal.

What happens if your CGPA falls between 1.67 and 2.00 at IIUM?

You're placed on academic probation and capped at a maximum academic load of 18 credits for that semester. If your CGPA doesn't recover to 2.00 or above, or you're placed on probation a third, non-consecutive time, you face academic dismissal.

Can a dismissed IIUM student apply for readmission?

Yes, once, provided there was no disciplinary misconduct and the student's CGPA at dismissal was at least 1.00. Readmission must be applied for within two regular semesters of the dismissal, and the student must bring their CGPA back to at least 2.00 by the end of the readmission semester or face dismissal again.

Do transferred credits count toward your CGPA at IIUM?

It depends on the source. Credits transferred from outside IIUM are recorded as an EX (Exempted) grade and do not count toward GPA/CGPA at all — only toward total credits completed. Credits transferred within IIUM (from Foundation Studies or Pre-Sessional programmes) keep their original grade and do count toward CGPA.

What's the minimum passing grade for a course at IIUM?

A grade of C (2.00) or above counts as a Pass for that course; D, D-, E and F are all treated as a Fail. A failed required course must be repeated, with the earlier failing grade recorded as RPT and excluded from CGPA.

Does IIUM grade Medicine and Dentistry students differently?

Yes. Kulliyyah of Medicine and Kulliyyah of Dentistry students are graded Pass-with-Distinction / Pass / Fail by exam phase, with no grade points at all — a completely separate system from the standard IIUM CGPA scale used by its other Kulliyyahs.

Source: SAPER 2021 Regulation 20-21 — verified Jul 2026

Does IIUM publish an official CGPA-to-percentage conversion?

No. IIUM's academic regulations state how GPA and CGPA are calculated from grade points, but do not publish a formula for converting a CGPA figure back into an equivalent percentage.
