University of Adelaide (UofA) GPA Calculator

For graded courses, Adelaide University records your result as a percentage mark, which converts to a letter grade on a grade-point scale: High Distinction (HD) 85–100 = 7, Distinction (D) 75–84 = 6, Credit (C) 65–74 = 5, Pass (P) 50–64 = 4, and Fail (F) below 50 = 1.5. This one table applies university-wide, to all undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students — including single-course, cross-institutional, short-course, micro-credential, non-award and offshore enrolments.

Note the Australian sense of the letters: at Adelaide University, D means Distinction — the second-highest grade — and C means Credit, not a near-fail. See the Grade Scale Reference above for every grade and its grade points.

A separate outcome, Failed Hurdle (FH), is also worth 1.5 grade points — the same as an ordinary Fail. It applies when a student fails to satisfy a specific hurdle requirement (such as a mandatory placement or competency component) rather than simply scoring below 50%.

Some courses are non-graded: Pass Non-Graded (PNG) or Fail Non-Graded (FNG), assessed without a percentage mark and excluded from your GPA and WAM entirely.

Your grade point average is the average of your course grades, weighted by each course's unit value:

GPA = sum of (course grade points × course units) / sum of (course units)

Only completed courses with a recorded course grade, taken under your current program, count toward your GPA. Non-graded courses do not contribute to either your GPA or your WAM. GPAs are truncated (not rounded) to two decimal points when published.

Unusually, no result on Adelaide University's scale is worth 0 grade points: an ordinary Fail (F) and a Failed Hurdle (FH) are both worth 1.5, the lowest value anywhere on the scale — there is no zero floor for a failed graded course.

Adelaide University's academic record system carries forward your history: if you began your studies at the former University of Adelaide or the former University of South Australia before the January 2026 merger, your Adelaide University academic transcript includes your full enrolment history from your foundation institution, and the same current GPA methodology and grading scale described here apply to your ongoing studies regardless of which institution you originally enrolled at.

Adelaide University does not set a single minimum cumulative GPA to remain enrolled. Instead, your results are reviewed at the end of each review period. Your academic progress is unsatisfactory if you: fail 50% or more of the courses you were enrolled in during a review period (where you took more than one course), fail a course you have failed before, or fail a course required to progress (such as an annual examination or a practice-based learning activity). Withdraw – Not Fail (W) results are not counted against you.

• Risk Notice 1: the first time you don't make satisfactory progress, you're notified by email and offered support to identify barriers and improve.
• Risk Notice 2: a second time, you're encouraged to submit an academic support plan describing what you've done since your first notice.
• Unsatisfactory: a third time, you receive an Intention to Preclude Notice and must apply to the Academic Progress Committee within 10 working days to explain why you should remain enrolled.
• Preclusion: if your application isn't accepted (or you don't lodge one), you're precluded from the program for at least 12 months, with a right of appeal under the Student Appeals Policy.

Before your award is conferred, Adelaide University's Student Success team must confirm you've met all academic requirements for your program, and that you're not in bad financial standing (tuition, student services and amenities fees, or other charges more than 21 days overdue) or holding unresolved academic or administrative issues.

Once conferred — normally at the first scheduled graduation ceremony following completion — you receive a parchment (testamur), an Australian Higher Education Graduation Statement (AHEGS), and a free digital academic transcript.

This procedure, and the academic transcripts it governs, explicitly cover graduates of Adelaide University, graduates of the University of South Australia and its antecedent institutions, and graduates of The University of Adelaide and its antecedent institutions — the merged university's graduation and records processes apply across all three lineages, not only to students who commenced after the January 2026 merger.

If you're completing a Bachelor Honours program, your overall Honours classification is a separate calculation from your regular course GPA. It's based on your Honours weighted average mark (WAM), calculated across all units required for your Honours program as specified in your program's academic rules:

Adelaide University can grant credit toward your program through credit transfer, articulation, recognition of prior learning (RPL), or advanced standing — including specified credit, unspecified credit, block credit, course substitution, and formal, informal or non-formal learning. Prior study must have been completed with a pass grade or higher, at an appropriate academic level, at a recognised Australian or overseas provider, no more than 10 years before you commence — and there's no fee to apply.

If your previous courses were completed at Adelaide University, The University of Adelaide, or the University of South Australia, you may not need to supply separate evidence of completion — your record is already held. For other providers, you'll need a certified transcript, a myeQuals digital transcript, or an authenticated VET transcript.

Maximum credit is capped so you complete at least one year full-time at Adelaide University: 96 of 144 units for a Bachelor degree, 144 of 192 for a Bachelor with embedded Honours, 12 of 48 for an Honours degree, 24 of 96 for a 2-year Masters. Credit is never granted for research/thesis components, where it would double-count credit already used for another award, or for study completed while suspended, precluded or expelled from Adelaide University.
