How grading works at QUT
Most QUT units grade on a numbered scale from 1 to 7, with 7 the highest possible final grade and 1 the lowest — not a letter scale. The number itself is your grade; the words below are QUT's own descriptors for each numeral, each tied to a published percentage range:
- 7 — High Distinction (85-100%)
- 6 — Distinction (75-84%)
- 5 — Credit (65-74%)
- 4 — Pass (50-64%)
- 3 — Marginal Fail (40-49%, may be eligible for supplementary assessment)
- 2 — Fail (25-39%)
- 1 — Low Fail (fewer than 25%)
A grade of 3 or lower is a fail. Some units use ungraded outcomes instead of a number: S (Satisfactory) and U (Unsatisfactory), used where approved. QUT also allocates administrative grades automatically, including E (Exempt, advanced standing granted) and K (Withdrawn Fail, for withdrawing after the published census date).

How your QUT GPA is calculated
Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is the credit-point-weighted average of your final numeric grades: GPA = Σ(credit points × numeric grade) ÷ Σ(credit points), across all completed units in a course.
Worked example (QUT's own): a semester of four 12-credit-point units graded 7, 4, 6 and 3 — GPA = ((12×7)+(12×4)+(12×6)+(12×3)) ÷ 48 = 5.0.
Your GPA includes every unit awarded a numeric grade, and also counts a unit graded K (Withdrawn Fail — withdrawing after the census date) as if it were a 1. It excludes: results not yet finalised, units graded S (Satisfactory) or U (Unsatisfactory), units completed at another institution, and units recorded as E (Exempt).

GPA thresholds for awards and honours
QUT uses your GPA to determine eligibility for awards with distinction: a GPA of at least 5.5 for undergraduate courses, or 6.0 for postgraduate courses, plus completing at least 50% of the course's credit points at QUT.
For bachelor honours degrees completed from 1 January 2023, the class of honours is set by your honours GPA:
- Honours I (First Class): 6.20-7.00
- Honours IIA (Second Class, Division A): 5.65-6.199
- Honours IIB (Second Class, Division B): 5.00-5.649
- Honours III (Third Class): below 5.00
Students who commenced their course before 1 January 2023 are awarded the higher of this scale or QUT's previous honours scale (Honours I: 6.50-7.00; IIA: 5.50-6.49; IIB: 4.50-5.49; III: below 4.50), whichever class is higher.

It starts at 1, not 0. QUT's own grading policy runs numeric grades from 7 (the highest) down to 1 (Low Fail, the lowest) — there's no 0 on the standard scale, and even a withdrawn-after-census unit (grade K) is counted as a 1 in your GPA, not a 0.

Are QUT grades letters (HD, D, C) or numbers?
Numbers. QUT's official grading table lists 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 as the actual final grades, each tied to a percentage range; “High Distinction”, “Distinction”, “Credit”, “Pass”, “Marginal Fail”, “Fail” and “Low Fail” are descriptive names for each number, not separate letter grades used in your GPA calculation.
