Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) GPA Calculator

UKM grades every undergraduate course on an 11-band, 4.00-scale letter system (A down to E), with a fixed marks band and grade value for each letter set once, university-wide, in the university's own Academic Regulations — there is no curved or relative grading described anywhere in the document.

UKM's own regulations add one nuance: the table also labels each grade band by status (Cemerlang/Excellent, Kepujian/Credit, Lulus/Pass, Gagal/Fail), and exactly where "Pass" ends and "Fail" begins for course-progression purposes shifts slightly by faculty — the Faculties of Pharmacy, Dentistry, and Allied & Health Sciences treat C- and below as failing, while most other faculties draw that line lower, down to D or even only E. This affects how a faculty administers course pass/fail internally; it does not change any grade's point value, which is identical across the whole university.

UKM reports a semester PNG (Purata Nilai Gred) — GPA — and a cumulative PNGK (Purata Nilai Gred Kumulatif) — CGPA — both credit-hour weighted on UKM's 0.00–4.00 scale:

• PNG = the sum, across a semester's registered courses, of (Grade Value × Credit Hours), divided by the total credit hours taken that semester.
• PNGK = the same calculation across every course taken since enrolment.

Courses that receive a failing grade are counted toward that semester's PNG and PNGK. If a course is repeated, only the most recent examination result is counted in PNGK — the earlier (lower) grade is dropped from the calculation entirely, not averaged in.

Starting from a student's second semester onward (every student is allowed to proceed to semester 2 regardless of their first-semester result), UKM classifies academic standing purely by cumulative PNGK:

• PNGK 2.00 or above — "Lulus" (Pass): the student may continue their studies and remains eligible for degree conferment.
• PNGK 1.00 up to but below 2.00 — "Lulus Bersyarat" (Conditional Pass): the student is given a formal warning and is not eligible for degree conferment while in this band. A student cannot remain in Conditional Pass status for two consecutive semesters (not counting their first semester) — if PNGK is still below 2.00 the following semester, the student is given "Gagal dan Diberhentikan" (Failed and Discontinued) status.
• PNGK below 1.00 — the student is given "Gagal dan Diberhentikan" (Failed and Discontinued) directly and is not eligible for the degree.

Students admitted via the APEL.Q pathway are exempted from the two-consecutive-semester rule, but must still reach PNGK 2.00 by the end of their studies to be awarded "Lulus dan Layak dianugerahkan Ijazah" (Pass and Eligible for Degree) status. A student given Discontinued status for the first time may appeal to continue their studies.

To be awarded a Bachelor's degree with Honours, a UKM student must meet both of the following, subject to any additional conditions a specific Faculty's Senate-approved programme requirements set:

• A cumulative PNGK of at least 2.00 across all courses taken; and
• At least 120 credits of the courses stipulated for the programme (or another stipulated total).

Students are permitted to accumulate additional credits specifically to raise their PNGK — either by registering for other Faculty-approved courses, or by re-registering for a course they have already passed (subject to UKM's repeat-course rules).

Degrees are conferred by class, based on final PNGK (subject to Faculty-specific conditions):

• PNGK 3.67–4.00 — Bachelor's degree with Honours (Cemerlang / Excellent).
• PNGK 2.00–3.66 — Bachelor's degree with Honours (ordinary class).

UKM's Dean's Award recognizes academic achievement within a single semester. To be considered, a student must meet all of the following:

• A semester PNG of at least 3.67, calculated over a minimum of 12 credits (excluding any course whose credits don't count toward PNG that semester);
• No disciplinary action ever taken against the student;
• Official registration in a degree programme at any UKM Faculty;
• All university fees and debts settled at the time of selection; and
• Faculty certification that the student meets the criteria.

Selection is made at the Faculty Meeting, and a Faculty may name more than one Dean's Award recipient per semester. Students in an extended study period (beyond the normal programme duration) are not eligible for the Dean's Award.

UKM distinguishes credit transfer with grade from transfer without grade, and treatment depends on the transfer route:

• Vertical transfer (e.g., from a post-secondary qualification such as a diploma, on admission): capped at 30% of a programme's total credits (up to 50% for Malaysian TVET diploma holders), requires a grade of at least C (diploma entrants: C for the first 30%, B for the 31–50% band), and requires at least 80% similarity in learning outcomes/content to the equivalent UKM course. These credits count toward graduation but are not counted in PNG or PNGK.
• Horizontal transfer (e.g., changing programmes within or into UKM, or student-mobility programmes): requires at least 80% content similarity and a grade of at least C, with no cap on the percentage of credits transferable (subject to a minimum one-semester residency requirement). These credits and their grades count toward both graduation and PNG/PNGK.
• APEL.C credit (prior experiential learning): capped at 30% of a programme's graduating credits; counts toward graduation credits but carries no grade, so it is not counted in PNG/PNGK.

All transfer applications must be lodged within the first four weeks of a student's first year, and a request, once approved, cannot be withdrawn by the student.
