Forsyth Technical Community College (Forsyth Tech) GPA Calculator

The grading system applies to all credit and non-credit classes at Forsyth Tech; any exception is approved by the appropriate dean and stated in the course syllabus.

Grades W (Withdrawal), I (Incomplete), S (Satisfactory), AU (Audit), U (Unsatisfactory), TR (Course Transferred), P (Pass), R (Repeat), and CR (Credit Granted or Passed Proficiency) do not count toward GPA.

P is assigned when a student reaches 80% proficiency in a transitional English or math course; R is assigned when that threshold is not met and the course must be repeated. Incomplete (I) requires at least 75% of course requirements completed with a grade of C or better, and converts to F (credit courses) or U (non-credit courses) if not resolved by the stated deadline.

GPA is calculated by dividing total grade points earned by the number of semester credit hours attempted. Withdrawal (W), Audit (AU), and Incomplete (I) count as an attempt but are not included in the GPA calculation.

A course may be repeated, for credit or audit, up to three times without special permission; a fourth or later attempt requires approval from the appropriate academic dean.

Academic Forgiveness: students may petition to exclude previously earned grades of F or WF from their GPA. Eligibility requires at least three years since the poor performance, at least nine credit hours completed since then at Forsyth Tech with a grade of C or higher and a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher, and forgiveness not previously used. Forgiven grades stay on the transcript with a notation but are excluded from the GPA calculation.

Good academic standing requires a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00, evaluated at the end of each term (Fall, Spring, Summer).

A cumulative GPA below 2.00 places a student on Academic Alert. From Alert, a term GPA below 2.00 moves the student to Academic Probation; from Probation, a term GPA below 2.00 moves the student to Academic Suspension for one term. Students on alert, probation, or suspension must earn a term GPA of 2.00 or higher to progress toward good standing.

Readmission after suspension requires an Academic Success Contract and a term GPA of 2.00 or higher in the first term back; falling short returns the student to suspension.

A final cumulative GPA of 2.00 is required for graduation from all programs of study.

Students must complete at least 25 percent of a program's required credits at Forsyth Tech to earn the degree, diploma, or certificate.

Graduation Honors: graduates with a cumulative GPA of 4.00 in their program receive their degree or diploma with high honors; 3.50-3.99 receives honors.

Semester Honors (credit-bearing enrollment, all coursework completed, no Incomplete grades):

• President's List: semester GPA of 4.0, minimum 9 credit hours
• Dean's List: semester GPA of 3.50-3.999, minimum 9 credit hours
• Part-Time Honor Roll: semester GPA of 3.50 or higher, 6-11 credit hours

Phi Theta Kappa membership requires a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better, 18-48 earned credit hours, and enrollment in an associate degree program; members must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA to remain in good standing.

Courses taken at another college with an earned grade of 'C' or better may be used to fulfill graduation requirements, but the grade earned at Forsyth Tech is used for GPA purposes — transferred courses (grade TR) are not included in the GPA calculation.

Credit may also be granted for standardized exams (CLEP, AP, IB, DANTES/DSST) and institutional proficiency exams; these credits (grade CR) are recorded but do not affect GPA. At least 25 percent of a program's required credits must be completed at Forsyth Tech to earn the credential.
