Other Grade Designations

Beyond the letter grades used in the GPA, SAU records several other grade designations. WF (withdrawn failing) and XF (failure with academic dishonesty) are computed as an F in the grade point average. AU (audit), NC (non-credit), W (withdrawn), and WN (withdrawn nonattending) are not computed in the grade point average. An I (incomplete) must be resolved by the University's stated deadline or it converts to an F.

How the GPA Is Calculated

The grade point average is obtained by multiplying the grade points awarded for each grade by the course's credit-hour value, then dividing the total grade points earned by the total hours attempted at SAU.

A course may be repeated to improve a grade; the most recent grade earned at SAU is used in the cumulative GPA, not the earlier one. Up to 24 semester hours of coursework may be repeated for this purpose.

Academic Warning and Suspension

To remain in good academic standing, students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 1.50 through 29 attempted hours, and 2.00 at 30 or more attempted hours. A student who falls below the applicable minimum is placed on academic warning and has one semester to raise their semester GPA to 1.75 (1-29 hours) or 2.00 (30+ hours) or be suspended.

Transfer Grades and the GPA

A grade of C or higher earned at another accredited institution is entered on the SAU transcript, but it is not used in calculating the cumulative grade point average — only grades earned at SAU count toward the GPA.

How do I convert semester GPA to cumulative GPA at SAU?
Your cumulative GPA is the credit-weighted average of your semester GPAs across every semester: (semester GPA₁ × credits₁ + … + semester GPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + … + creditsₙ). Save each semester to the tracker on this page, by course or as a quick semester GPA + credits entry, and it works out your cumulative GPA on every save, edit and delete.
Is this SAU GPA calculator free, and is my data private?
Yes. GPAWise is free, with no signup, and your courses and saved semesters stay in your browser: nothing is sent to our servers. "Clear all tracker data" on the tracker wipes them at any time.
