How grading works at UiTM
UiTM grades every course on a fixed, university-wide letter scale from A+ down to F, each letter carrying a fixed grade point on a 0.00-4.00 scale. Unlike some universities that curve grades against a class's own mean and standard deviation, UiTM's Academic Regulations print one absolute marks-to-grade table that applies the same way to every course, in both Diploma and Bachelor's (Honours) Degree programmes.
A grade of C or above counts as a pass for the course (recorded with a 'Lulus' status); C- and below is a fail (recorded as a first, second, or third failed attempt depending on how many times the course has been taken).

How UiTM calculates PNG and HPNG
UiTM reports a semester PNG (Purata Nilai Gred — Grade Point Average) and a cumulative HPNG (Himpunan Purata Nilai Gred — Cumulative Grade Point Average), both credit-weighted on the 0.00-4.00 grade-point scale:
- PNG is calculated from the credit values (grade point × credit units) earned in a single semester, divided by the credit units registered that semester.
- HPNG is the same calculation across every semester of study to date.
Students who finish with a Vice Chancellor's Award, Dean's Award, a standard completion status, or who pass every required course despite a sub-2.00 HPNG (status D6) have their HPNG regenerated: any failed course's original grade is swapped out for the passing grade later earned on repeat, so only the passing attempt counts toward the final CGPA. Grades recorded under disciplinary action or unauthorised exam absence are not swapped this way.

Probation, dismissal, and repeat rules at UiTM
UiTM tracks academic standing by semester HPNG:
- First Probation (P1) — HPNG between 1.80 and 1.99 in a semester.
- Second Probation (P2) — HPNG below 2.00 in the semester immediately following a P1 semester.
Falling further triggers dismissal, recorded under one of several statuses: HPNG below 1.80 (with or without a prior P1 status), HPNG below 2.00 after a P2 status, failing the same course a third time, reaching the maximum allowed study duration with an HPNG below 2.00 or with incomplete courses remaining, or not sitting the final examination for every registered course in a semester without University approval. A student who is dismissed can lodge an appeal to continue studying, which if successful continues the programme under a part-time fee arrangement.
Repeat courses: a failed course must be retaken; the passing grade earned on repeat is what counts toward a regenerated CGPA (see above). Students with only one or two failing courses left in their final two semesters may instead sit a Special Examination — but only if the continuous-assessment component of the failed course (excluding the final-exam component) already scored at least 50%, and the highest grade obtainable through a Special Examination is capped at C, regardless of the mark achieved.

What you need to graduate from UiTM
Both Diploma and Bachelor's (Honours) Degree candidates must reach a cumulative HPNG of at least 2.00, pass every course required by their programme with a completed status, and meet every other University requirement, before being certified for the award by Senate. Bachelor's Degree candidates admitted from the March 2015 intake onward must additionally have sat the English Exit Test (EET).
There is no separate, higher CGPA floor for graduation beyond this 2.00 threshold — the same 2.00 HPNG that ends academic probation is also the graduation floor.

Dean's Award, Vice Chancellor's Award, and degree classification at UiTM
Dean's Award (Anugerah Dekan, "AD") is given each semester a student achieves a semester PNG of at least 3.50 across at least 12 graded credit units (or their full semester credit load, if lower), excluding Pass/Fail-type courses, with no disciplinary record.
Vice Chancellor's Award (Anugerah Naib Canselor, "ANC") — UiTM's highest academic honour — goes to a student who earns the Dean's Award in every semester of their programme's minimum duration (excluding industrial-training semesters), passes any required industrial training, never repeats a course, and is never subject to disciplinary action.
Bachelor's degree classification (Diploma programmes are not classified) is based on final HPNG: First Class at 3.50-4.00, Second Class (Upper) at 3.00-3.49, Second Class (Lower) at 2.20-2.99, and Third Class at 2.00-2.19.

Credit exemption and credit transfer at UiTM
UiTM distinguishes two different routes for bringing outside credit in, with different effects on CGPA:
- Credit exemption (Pengecualian Kredit) — a "vertical" transfer (e.g. from a lower level of study into a higher one) without carrying marks or a grade across. Capped at 30% of the current programme's total credits, and requires at least a grade C (2.00) in the equivalent course, at least 80% curriculum equivalency, and that the original programme was accredited. Exempted credits count toward the degree's credit requirement but are excluded from PNG/HPNG.
- Credit transfer (Pemindahan Kredit) — a "horizontal" transfer (same level of study) that carries the original marks and grade across, with no cap on the number of credits transferred, and the transferred grade is included in PNG/HPNG. Students transferring credit through a mobility or exchange programme specifically must already hold an HPNG of at least 3.00.
Students switching between UiTM programmes must also meet a minimum residency: at least 2 semesters already completed for a Bachelor's-level switch, or at least 1 semester for a Diploma/Certificate-level switch.

What happens if your HPNG falls below 2.00 at UiTM?
You're placed on First Probation if your semester HPNG is between 1.80 and 1.99, or Second Probation if it's still below 2.00 the semester after that. Falling further — HPNG below 1.80, failing a course a third time, or reaching your maximum study duration still below 2.00 — leads to dismissal, though you can lodge an appeal to continue studying, typically under a part-time arrangement.

What CGPA do you need for the Dean's Award or Vice Chancellor's Award at UiTM?
The Dean's Award needs a semester PNG of at least 3.50 across at least 12 graded credit units, with no disciplinary record. The Vice Chancellor's Award — UiTM's top honour — needs the Dean's Award in every semester of your programme's minimum duration, plus never repeating a course and never facing disciplinary action.

How is UiTM's Bachelor's degree classification determined?
By your final HPNG: First Class at 3.50-4.00, Second Class (Upper) at 3.00-3.49, Second Class (Lower) at 2.20-2.99, and Third Class at 2.00-2.19. Diploma programmes at UiTM are not classified this way.

If you fail and repeat a course at UiTM, does it still count against your CGPA?
Not once you've passed it and you finish in good standing. For students who complete with a Vice Chancellor's Award, Dean's Award, standard completion, or who pass every required course despite a sub-2.00 HPNG, UiTM regenerates your CGPA by swapping each failed course's original grade for the passing grade you earned on repeat — so only the passing attempt counts. Grades from disciplinary action or an unauthorised exam absence are never swapped in this way.

Does transferred or exempted credit count toward your CGPA at UiTM?
It depends on the route. Credit exemption (bringing in credit from a lower level of study, without its original marks/grade) is excluded from your PNG/HPNG entirely — it only counts toward your credit-completion requirement. Credit transfer (bringing in credit with its original marks/grade from the same level of study) does count toward your PNG/HPNG. Transferring credit through a mobility or exchange programme additionally requires an HPNG of at least 3.00 beforehand.
