Clark State College GPA Calculator

Clark State computes GPA by dividing the total course points earned by the total credit hours attempted in eligible courses. Two cumulative GPAs are maintained: a Progress GPA, which includes pre-college (developmental) coursework, and a transcript GPA, which includes only 1000-level courses and above.

Grades of S, U, I, PR, CR, NC, EX, TR, W, X, N and AR carry no course points and are excluded from both GPA calculations; the subset S, PR, CR, EX, TR and AR still count toward completed credit hours on the transcript.

A course may be repeated once without permission; a third or later attempt requires approval from the assistant dean of the academic school. When a course is repeated, only the last grade earned is used in the Progress GPA and transcript GPA.

Students returning after an absence of three or more consecutive academic years may petition for a Fresh Start, eliminating prior Progress and transcript GPAs, provided their cumulative progress GPA was 2.5 or below before readmission. Courses previously graded C or better still count toward hours earned but not toward GPA. Fresh Start may be used only once.

A student is in Good Academic Standing when the progress cumulative GPA is at or above 2.00 and the progress term GPA is at or above 1.00. Falling below either threshold places a student on Academic Intervention, which requires enrollment in the Academic Engagement Program and caps enrollment at 9 credit hours in fall/spring terms (6 in summer) unless the academic dean approves an exception.

Students who do not return to Good Standing after Academic Intervention are placed on Academic Pause, with an opportunity to appeal.

To qualify for a degree, a student must pass all required major courses and hold a cumulative transcript GPA of at least 2.0. Students in Early Childhood Education, Emergency Medical, Medical Assisting, Medical Laboratory, Practical Nursing, Registered Nursing, Physical Therapist Assistant, Social Services and Diagnostic Medical Sonography must earn a C or better in all required major courses.

Residency requires at least 30 credit hours completed at Clark State for a bachelor's degree, 15 for an associate degree, or 12 for a one-year certificate; transfer, articulated, experiential and proficiency credit do not count toward residency.

Students carrying at least 6 credit hours with a transcript GPA of 3.5 or better for the semester are placed on the Dean's List. Students with a cumulative transcript GPA of 3.5 or higher at the end of fall semester are recognized with academic honors at Commencement.

An Honors Distinction is awarded to students who complete four honors courses with a grade of B or higher and present an honors project.

Accepted transfer credit is recorded with a grade of TR, which carries no course points and is excluded from GPA calculations, though it counts toward completed hours. Students who disagree with a transfer credit decision may file an appeal with the Records and Registration Office using the Transfer Credit Appeal form.
