How FIU Calculates GPA

FIU calculates GPA for all students using grades earned at FIU only; transfer course grades are never included in any GPA calculation. There are two types of GPA: semester GPA (courses taken that term) and cumulative GPA (a summary of all FIU courses taken in a student's career). When a student's career changes (for example, undergraduate to graduate), the GPA calculation begins anew. Do not average semester GPAs to get the cumulative GPA — recompute from all courses. All GPAs are rounded to two decimal points.

Grades such as P (Satisfactory), IN (Incomplete), W/WA/WI (withdrawals), AU (Audit), DR (Dropped), NC (No Credit), and NG carry no point value and are excluded from the GPA calculation entirely — their credits are not included in the divisor.

Grade Forgiveness

Undergraduate students may use grade forgiveness up to three times to improve their GPA, applying only to courses in which they earned a grade lower than a C (2.00). Only the grade from the final repeat is used in computing the GPA; the repeated course must match the original attempt's grading option and credit hours, and both attempts must have been completed at FIU. This recalculation is an internal FIU process only and might not be honored by other institutions or services.

Academic Warning, Probation, and Dismissal

Undergraduate: a cumulative GPA below 2.0 triggers academic warning. If the cumulative GPA is still below 2.0 the next semester, the student moves to probation; a student on probation who posts a term GPA of 2.0 or higher stays on probation rather than being dismissed. Automatic dismissal occurs when both cumulative and semester GPA fall below 2.0 while on probation. Undergraduates cannot be dismissed before attempting a minimum of 20 semester hours. Dismissal lasts at least one year, and students have ten working days to appeal.

Graduate: students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 to remain in good standing. Falling below 3.0 triggers warning, a further semester below 3.0 triggers probation, and cumulative and semester GPA below 3.0 for a third term results in automatic dismissal. Appeals follow the same ten-working-day window.

Minimum GPA to Graduate

To earn a bachelor's degree, students must reach a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher for coursework completed at FIU — or a higher minimum where a specific program requires it. Graduate degrees carry no GPA-based honors.

Dean's List and Graduation Honors

Undergraduates who complete nine or more term credit hours with a term GPA of 3.500 or higher are placed on the semester Dean's List. Graduation honors (undergraduate only, requiring at least 40 semester hours earned at FIU) are: Cum Laude at 3.500–3.699, Magna Cum Laude at 3.700–3.899, and Summa Cum Laude at 3.900 or higher.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at FIU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at FIU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Florida International University (FIU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
