Administrative and Incomplete Grades

Two grades are assigned administratively rather than for academic performance: W (Withdrawal) and F* (Administrative F), both used in connection with withdrawal from courses. The F* grade carries a point value of 0 and is used exactly like an academic F grade in calculating the GPA; the W grade is not counted in the GPA.

The grade of I (Incomplete) is temporary and does not affect the GPA until it is converted to a permanent grade. Course work must be completed by the end of the sixth week of the following semester, or the I automatically becomes an F.

How the GPA Is Calculated and Repeated Courses

Grade points for a course equal the point value of the assigned grade multiplied by the course's credit hours; the cumulative GPA is the total grade points earned divided by the total accumulated grade-point credits.

A matriculated student may repeat a course up to two times (three attempts total, including W, I, and F grades) without approval beyond the first repeat; a second repeat requires approval from the Dean of the School or College offering the course. Once a course is repeated, only the higher grade earned is used to calculate the GPA, though all attempts remain on the transcript.

Academic Standing Policy

Academic Good Standing requires a cumulative and semester GPA of 2.000 or higher and successful completion of at least 66% of cumulative credits attempted.

A student in good standing whose GPA falls below 2.000, or who fails the 66% completion rate, receives Academic Warning. A student who remains below those thresholds the following semester is placed on Academic Probation (and remains on Probation if a subsequent semester GPA of 2.000 or better is achieved without the cumulative GPA yet reaching 2.000).

A student on Academic Probation who has a cumulative GPA below 2.000 and fails to achieve a semester GPA of 2.000 is Academically Dismissed from the university.

Grade-Point Average Requirement for Awarding of Degree

Candidates for a Bachelor's Degree must attain a final cumulative grade-point average of at least 2.000, as well as a minimum GPA of 2.000 in their major field of study, before the degree will be awarded.

Dean's List and Degree Honors

Students carrying 12 or more credits with a semester GPA of 3.250 or higher, no incomplete or missing grades, and good academic standing are placed on the Dean's List.

Departmental Honors requires at least a 3.5 GPA in the major field plus an approved honors project. Latin Degree Honors, requiring a minimum of 48 credit hours completed at Salem State, are awarded by cumulative GPA: Summa Cum Laude (3.850–4.000), Magna Cum Laude (3.600–3.849), and Cum Laude (3.250–3.599).

Transfer Student Credits in Residence

A transfer student must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours at Salem State University to receive the baccalaureate degree. The cumulative GPA is calculated solely on credit earned and grade points received at Salem State University and through the Northeast Consortium Colleges and Universities (NECCUM) cross-registration system — grades and credit earned at another institution are never used in computing the Salem State GPA.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at SSU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at SSU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Salem State University (SSU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
