New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) GPA Calculator

Undergraduate courses are graded on an A through F scale with plus/minus distinctions (no A+ is awarded). Several notations carry no quality points and are excluded from GPA calculation: W (withdrawal), UW (unofficial withdrawal), I (incomplete), PR (progress, developmental/ESL courses only), P (passing grade), and AU (audit).

An incomplete (I) converts to a failing grade (F) if the outstanding coursework is not finished by the deadline on the academic calendar, regardless of the average otherwise maintained in the course.

GPA is computed by adding all quality points earned in a semester and dividing by the number of credits for courses graded A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, or D, or F. Cumulative GPA (CGPA) is computed the same way across all semesters attended. New York Tech does not round the cumulative GPA.

If a course is repeated, only the higher grade is used in computing the GPA and CGPA; the earlier grade remains on the transcript for the record but does not affect the average. Undergraduates may repeat a course earning C-, D+, D, F, W, UW, or PR a maximum of two times without additional approval.

Undergraduates must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 at the end of each fall and spring semester to remain in good academic standing.

• Academic Notice I: the first semester the cumulative GPA falls below 2.0.
• Academic Notice II: a second semester below 2.0 (not necessarily consecutive); registration is capped at 16 credits until good standing is restored.
• Academic Dismissal: a third semester below 2.0 (not necessarily consecutive), appealable to the Committee on Academic Standing and Dismissal within three weeks of the semester's last day.

Graduate students follow the same three-step structure at a 3.0 cumulative GPA threshold, with a third shortfall resulting in program review rather than automatic dismissal.

Undergraduates need a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 to graduate; graduate students need a minimum of 3.0 (some programs require higher). These minimums cannot be waived. To be eligible for graduation, undergraduates must complete a minimum of 30 credits toward the degree, including at least 15 major credits in residence at New York Tech and at least 9 advanced-level (300 or higher) major credits.

Graduating undergraduates earn summa cum laude at a cumulative GPA of at least 3.7, magna cum laude at least 3.5, and cum laude at least 3.2. Graduate students earn their degree "with distinction" at a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA. Certificate and associate-degree students are not eligible for honors.

The Dean's Honor List requires a semester GPA of at least 3.5 (full-time, 12+ credits) or 3.6 (part-time, 6+ credits) with no incomplete grades; the Presidential Honor List requires the same course load with a 3.7 GPA.

At least 55% of a student's college coursework must be in letter-graded courses (from New York Tech or a prior college) to be considered for honors; if fewer than 55% of credits were earned at New York Tech, a 3.2 New York Tech GPA is required before transfer grades count toward the honors average.

Transfer credit requires a minimum grade of C- for undergraduate courses or B for graduate courses. Transfer credit grades are not calculated into a student's GPA. Students with 70 or more cumulative credits (including transfer credit and credits in progress) must complete their remaining coursework at a senior-level institution.
