Palo Alto College (PAC) GPA Calculator

Palo Alto College records permanent grades only at the end of each semester or session. Beyond the standard letter grades, the catalog defines several other notations: I (incomplete — converts to F after 120 calendar days unless the coursework is completed), IM (incomplete military), IP (in-progress, for developmental and Academic Refresher courses), NC (non-credit), W (withdrawal that does not count toward the six-drop limit), WS (withdrawal that counts toward the six-drop limit), WX (withdrawal exemption), WM (military withdrawal), CR (non-traditional credit only), AU (audit), P (pass), and NR (not recorded, assigned automatically when no final grade is posted by the instructor). WF (withdrawal failing) and WP (withdrawal passing) are listed in the catalog as grades no longer in use.

The grade point average is derived by dividing the total quality points earned by the total semester credit hours attempted, excluding hours graded W, WM, WS, WX, IP, CR, NC, NR, or AU. To calculate it: multiply each course's semester credit hours by its quality points, add the results together, then divide the sum by the semester credit hours attempted.

A student attending more than one Alamo Colleges District college has two GPAs: an institution GPA based on courses taken at the home college, and an overall GPA based on courses completed across all colleges in the district. When a course is repeated at the institution where the original grade was earned, only the highest grade earned is used in the institution GPA.

Students remain in Good Standing as long as their cumulative institutional GPA stays at or above 2.0 (including developmental pre-college courses). Falling below 2.0 moves a student to Academic Probation; from there, earning a 2.0 semester GPA without reaching a 2.0 cumulative GPA moves the student to Continued Academic Probation, while failing to earn a 2.0 semester GPA moves the student to Academic Dismissal. Repeated dismissals escalate from First to Second to Third-or-More Academic Dismissal, each requiring a petition and a longer mandatory sit-out period before re-enrollment. A student not in Good Standing may not participate in public activities, competitive teams, or hold club or class office, and a minimum cumulative institution GPA of 2.00 is required to participate in any student organization. Students receiving financial aid must separately satisfy the Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy.

Honors are awarded each Fall or Spring semester to students enrolled in twelve or more semester credit hours who hold a cumulative institution GPA of at least 2.0: Honors requires a semester institution GPA of 3.5–3.99, and President's Honors requires a semester institution GPA of 4.0. Students are recognized at each Alamo Colleges District college where they meet the qualification, and an Honors Convocation may be held annually to recognize achievements.
