Simon Fraser University (SFU) GPA Calculator

SFU uses three grading systems. Most courses use the Standard Grade System, which runs from A+ (4.33) down to F (0.00) on a 4.33-point scale — the full grade-to-point mapping is shown in the Grade Scale Reference above. Some courses instead use Competency Based Grades (Pass/Fail, ungraded) or Practicum Grades (Pass only) — these carry no numerical equivalent and do not affect the GPA.

Two grades on the Standard scale need special explanation. FD (“fail, academic discipline”) is assigned by a department chair when a student has committed academic dishonesty, and converts to a regular F two years after graduation. N is given when a student enrolled in a course but did not write the final exam or otherwise complete the coursework without withdrawing by the deadline — it counts as an F for scholastic standing, and the student must normally repeat the course for credit.

Each letter grade's numerical equivalent is multiplied by the course's unit value to produce grade points; grades with no numerical equivalent (P, W, and administrative notations) are excluded entirely. Your term GPA is the total grade points earned divided by total units completed that term, calculated to two decimal places. Your cumulative GPA (CGPA) is the same calculation across all terms completed to date, and closes in the term your degree or diploma is awarded by Senate — a new CGPA begins if you return for further study afterward.

SFU also tracks an upper division GPA (UDGPA) — the same calculation restricted to upper-division courses — used alongside the CGPA for graduation and honours/major program requirements. When a course is repeated, only the higher grade counts toward these GPA calculations, and credit for a given course or topic may only be granted once.

Every student is expected to maintain a minimum 2.00 CGPA; this requirement is first checked once a student has attempted at least 9 units. A student below 2.00 CGPA at that point is placed on academic probation (OAP) and may not take a course overload or request a letter of permission to study elsewhere.

Each term after that, a student on probation is evaluated: if both their term GPA and CGPA are 2.00 or higher, they return to good standing; if only one of the two is below 2.00, they continue on probation (CAP); if both the term GPA and CGPA are below 2.00, they are required to withdraw (RTW) — or, if already previously required to withdraw, placed on extended withdrawal (PW). Students required to withdraw for the first time may instead apply to the three-term Back on Track Student Success Program, which grants an extended academic probation period under the same 2.00 term-GPA/CGPA test.

To graduate, both your overall CGPA and your upper-division GPA (UDGPA) must clear a minimum that depends on your program type:

• Honours or joint honours: 3.00 or greater (both CGPA and UDGPA).
• Major, joint major, extended minors: 2.00 or greater (both CGPA and UDGPA).

Separately, a Minimum Program GPA applies to the coursework used to satisfy an honours/major/minor program itself: 3.00 for honours and joint honours, 2.00 for joint majors, majors, extended minors, and minors. In the event of a repeated course, only the higher grade counts toward any of these calculations. Individual faculties and departments may set higher requirements with Senate approval.

SFU recognizes strong performance two ways. Each term (or annually for students taking a lighter course load), a student who has completed at least 30 units at SFU and at least 12 GPA-counted units in the period being evaluated, with no FD grade, qualifies for the Dean's Honour Roll at a term GPA of 3.50 or higher, or the President's Honour Roll at a term GPA of 4.00 or higher. Admission is automatic — students don't apply.

At graduation, students earning their first undergraduate degree with 3.50 or greater on both their cumulative and upper-division GPA receive the designation “with distinction”, while 4.00 or greater on both earns “first class with distinction.”
