Grading System
South Plains College grades on a 4.0 scale: A (Excellent) = 4 points, B (Good) = 3 points, C (Average) = 2 points, D (Below Average) = 1 point, F (Failure) = 0 points, per semester hour.
Non-punitive marks — I (Incomplete), P (Pass), AU (Audit), CR (Credit), PR/E (Progress), W (Student Initiated Withdrawal), and X (Administrative Withdrawal) — carry no grade points and are not computed into the GPA.

How GPA Is Calculated
Semester GPA is the total grade points earned in college-level courses divided by the total semester hours attempted in that term, excluding hours graded W, X, AU, P, CR, PR, E, or I. Cumulative GPA divides total grade points by total college-level semester hours registered, including F hours but excluding the same non-computed grades.
If a course is repeated, only the last grade earned counts toward the cumulative GPA. Only courses taken at South Plains College are used in the calculation.

Academic Probation and Suspension
Students are placed on academic probation at the end of any term when their cumulative GPA in college-level courses falls below 2.00, once at least six semester hours have been attempted. A student on probation may continue enrolling as long as they earn at least a 2.00 GPA each subsequent term, and is removed from probation once cumulative GPA reaches 2.00.
A student who enrolls while on academic probation and fails to earn at least a 2.00 GPA in the following term is suspended.

President's Honor List requires at least 12 semester hours of college-level work and a 4.00 term GPA. Developmental courses do not count toward either list.
