Course instructors establish their own grading policy in course syllabi. Permanent grades are recorded only at the end of each semester or session.

Beyond letter grades A-F, San Antonio College also records: I (Incomplete), IM (Incomplete Military), IP (In-Progress, developmental/refresher courses), NC (Non-Credit), W/WS/WX/WM (withdrawal variants), CR (non-traditional credit only), AU (Audit), P (Pass), and NR (Not Recorded, assigned when no final grade is posted).

An Incomplete becomes an F 120 calendar days after the end of the term unless the student completes the remaining coursework with a grade of D or higher; re-enrolling in the course does not resolve an Incomplete. Grade changes may be requested within one year of the term the grade was issued, requiring instructor and department chair approval.

The GPA is calculated by multiplying each course's semester credit hours by its quality points, summing these totals, and dividing by the number of semester credit hours attempted (excluding W, WM, WS, WX, IP, CR, NC, NR, and AU grades).

Students in the Alamo Colleges District have two GPAs: an institution GPA, based on coursework at the student's home college, and an overall GPA, based on coursework completed at all colleges in the Alamo Colleges District.

If a course is repeated at the institution where the original grade was earned, only the highest grade earned is recorded in the institution GPA. Other colleges and universities may not follow this practice, so students planning to transfer should confirm the receiving institution's repeat policy.

Students are in Good Standing as long as they maintain a cumulative institutional GPA of 2.0 or higher, including developmental pre-college coursework.

Falling below a 2.0 cumulative institutional GPA moves a student to Academic Probation. A student who reaches a 2.0 semester institutional GPA while still below 2.0 cumulatively moves to Continued Academic Probation; failing to reach a 2.0 semester GPA leads to Academic Dismissal (First, Second, and Third-or-more tiers, each requiring a petition after an escalating sit-out period). Probation statuses return to Good Standing once a student earns a 2.0 GPA for both the semester and cumulative institutional GPA.

Students on probation or dismissal status must meet with an assigned advisor before registering, may be limited to an approved or reduced course load, and may have a registration hold pending compliance.

Honors are granted to students who earn a cumulative institution GPA of at least 2.0 together with a current-semester GPA of 3.5 or higher, in Fall or Spring semesters, while enrolled in twelve or more semester credit hours at the institution.

President's Honors requires the same cumulative GPA and credit-hour minimums with a semester institution GPA of 4.0.

Eligibility to participate in college-sponsored programs, events, competitive teams, or student organizations requires a minimum cumulative institution GPA of 2.00 and Good Standing status.
