Marist University GPA Calculator

Your GPA is the total quality points earned divided by the total semester hours attempted, on the scale of A through F (including WF). Some grades carry no quality points and are excluded from the GPA calculation entirely: Pass (P), No Credit (NC), and Unsatisfactory (U) — these courses are also excluded from the credits-attempted total. A grade of Withdrawal (W) is not counted in your GPA at all, while WF (Withdraw Failing) is counted, at the same 0.0 as an F.

Repeating a course: when you repeat a course at Marist, only the higher of the two grades counts toward your GPA — the quality points of the lower grade are removed and replaced, with no additional credits earned. Repeating a failed Marist course at another institution adds credits but not quality points.

At the end of each semester, you're expected to maintain a minimum 2.0 semester GPA and 2.0 cumulative GPA. Falling below either triggers review by the Academic Standards Committee, which may result in notice, academic restriction, or dismissal.

Students on academic restriction for a second consecutive semester lose eligibility for some extracurricular activities, including varsity athletics. A student dismissed may appeal once on a first dismissal, and may otherwise apply for one-time reinstatement no earlier than one semester later, submitting a written statement, a faculty letter of recommendation, an official transcript showing C-or-better performance at another institution, and a $150 reinstatement fee. Reinstated students must maintain at least a 2.0 semester GPA every subsequent term; reinstatement to Marist is never granted more than once.

The Dean's List is published each fall and spring for full-time students who earn a semester GPA of at least 3.60 while completing a minimum of 12 academic credits graded on the A-F scale, with no grade of I, D, F, or WF that semester.

At commencement, three Latin honors tiers are awarded to graduates who completed at least 60 credits at Marist: Summa Cum Laude (cumulative GPA of 3.85 or above, no grade below B), Magna Cum Laude (3.6 or above, no grade below C), and Cum Laude (3.25 or above). Additional class-wide awards — Valedictorian, Salutatorian, General Excellence, Merit, and Academic Distinction — are determined by credit thresholds and rank by cumulative GPA index within the graduating class.

Only courses in which you earned a C or better may be transferred to satisfy major, minor, related-field, or Core requirements. A grade of C- may only be transferred for elective credit.
