McGill University GPA Calculator

McGill uses a letter-grade system on a 0.00–4.00 scale. Instructors may submit final grades as either letter grades or percentages, but the official grade shown on your transcript is always the letter grade — the percentage is never the grade of record.

Grades A through C are satisfactory passes, D is a conditional (non-continuation) pass, and F is a failure. To fulfil program requirements you need a grade of C or better, and you can't register in a course until you've passed its prerequisites with a C or better (except by written permission of the department chair).

Certain courses are approved for Pass/Fail (P/F) grading, and students may designate elective courses under the Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) option — see the Grade Scale Reference above for the exact grade points.

Your GPA is calculated by multiplying each course's credit weight by its grade points and dividing the sum by your total GPA course credits. The result is truncated to two decimal places, not rounded — a GPA of 3.596 displays on your transcript as 3.59, never rounded up to 3.60.

McGill reports two GPAs: the term GPA (TGPA), covering all applicable courses at the same level in a given term, and the cumulative GPA (CGPA), covering your entire record of applicable courses at McGill at that level. If you change levels — for example, undergraduate to graduate — your CGPA starts again from zero.

Only courses with a final grade that carries grade points count as GPA course credits; a course graded P (Pass), for instance, contributes credits toward your degree but no GPA course credits at all, since P has no grade-point value.

Repeating a course: if you repeat a course, all final grades are included in the GPA calculation — grades of D or F continue to count toward your CGPA even after a repeat or supplemental exam. Credits are only granted once for a repeated course, regardless of the passing grade.

You must obtain a minimum CGPA of 2.00 to be considered for graduation with a McGill degree.
