How Grades Are Defined

Moraine Valley Community College (MVCC) defines each letter grade by level of mastery: A signifies outstanding mastery of the course's learning objectives; B, mastery beyond minimum competency; C, minimum competency; D, achievement below minimum competency but sufficient to earn credit; and F, insufficient achievement to receive credit.

How the GPA Is Calculated

Only A, B, C, D and F carry grade points and count toward the GPA. Audit (U), Incomplete (I), Withdrawal (W) and Pass (P, awarded only in specified vocational-skill courses) carry no grade-point value and are not figured into the GPA, though I defaults to F if course work is not completed within the following semester (not counting summer).

Developmental and remedial courses are excluded from the GPA shown on the semester grade report, official transcript, honors lists, and President's/Dean's List — but are included in the GPA used for Illinois Veteran Grants, financial aid, and Standards of Academic Progress purposes.

Students may repeat a college-level course twice and a developmental course three times (including withdrawals). Only the most recent grade counts toward the cumulative GPA; earlier attempts remain on the transcript but are excluded from the GPA calculation.

Standards of Academic Progress

MVCC calculates a separate "SOAP GPA" (including developmental/remedial courses) to determine academic standing, distinct from the transcript GPA. A cumulative SOAP GPA of 2.0 or above keeps a student in Good Standing. Falling below 2.0 moves a student through Academic Caution, then Academic Probation, then Academic Suspension, and — if the cumulative and semester SOAP GPA both remain below 2.0 in the first semester back from suspension — Academic Dismissal for one academic year. A student on Suspension with a cumulative SOAP GPA of 1.5 or above may appeal.

Minimum GPA for Graduation

A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 (excluding developmental and remedial courses) is required to earn an associate degree. A minimum overall GPA of 2.0 in the courses required for a certificate is required for occupational certificates.

Academic Honors

Each semester, students completing at least 9 credit hours of degree/certificate-applicable coursework qualify for the Dean's List at a 3.5 GPA or the President's List at a 3.75 GPA (both excluding developmental/remedial courses); a D, F or I grade disqualifies a student from either list. Part-time students may qualify for the Part-Time Student Scholastic Achievement List with a 3.5 cumulative GPA (at least 24 credit hours) and a 3.5 semester GPA while attempting 3-8 credit hours.

At graduation, degree recipients with a cumulative GPA of 3.9-4.0 graduate summa cum laude, 3.75-3.89 magna cum laude, and 3.5-3.74 cum laude. Certificate recipients graduate with high honors at 3.75-4.0 and with honors at 3.5-3.74.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at MVCC?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at MVCC?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Moraine Valley Community College (MVCC) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
