How GPA Is Calculated
Durham Tech calculates three separate GPAs: cumulative GPA (all Durham Tech coursework, including developmental and supplemental courses), program GPA (only courses on the student's plan of study, including general education requirements), and an overall GPA used for Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) toward financial aid.
If a course is repeated, only the highest grade counts toward the cumulative and program GPAs; the earlier attempt is marked with an R on the transcript. For the SAP GPA, grade points from every attempt of a repeated course are used.

Satisfactory Academic Progress (Financial Aid)
Students receiving financial aid must maintain an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher to demonstrate Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). The SAP GPA counts all past and recent enrollment periods at Durham Tech, including developmental and supplemental education courses, regardless of whether the student was receiving aid at the time.

Minimum GPA for Graduation
To graduate, students must complete all required courses and credit hours with a minimum GPA of 2.0 (2.5 for the Associate in Engineering degree, 2.7 for the Associate in Arts/Science in Teacher Preparation degrees). Some programs require a grade of no less than C in certain courses and no less than B in others, as set by the program handbook. Students must also complete at least 25% of their credit hours at Durham Tech.

Academic Honors
President's List: 3.75 GPA or higher with at least 12 curriculum credit hours in a term. Dean's List: 3.25–3.74 GPA with at least 12 curriculum credit hours. Part-Time Honor Roll: 3.25 GPA or higher with 6–11 curriculum credit hours.
Latin Honors at graduation (cumulative GPA): Cum Laude 3.25–3.74, Magna Cum Laude 3.75–3.99, Summa Cum Laude 4.0.

GPA Requirements for Transfer
Articulation agreements to four-year North Carolina institutions require a minimum cumulative GPA along with a grade of C or better in all courses: 2.0 for the Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, Associate in Fine Arts in Visual Arts, and Associate in General Education in Nursing degrees; 2.5 for the Associate in Engineering; 2.7 for the Associate in Arts/Science in Teacher Preparation.
When a student transfers, the receiving four-year institution may recalculate the GPA using its own method for handling repeated courses.
