Roger Williams University (RWU) GPA Calculator

An Incomplete grade (I) may be given at the discretion of the instructor; missing work must be completed by no later than the last day of classes of the subsequent academic semester, or the Incomplete automatically converts to a grade of F.

Students may enroll in one course per semester outside their major on a Pass/No Pass basis (juniors and seniors only); courses required for a student's major(s), minor(s), or the University Core Curriculum may not be taken Pass/No Pass.

A course grade may be appealed in writing within one semester of receiving the grade, first to the instructor, then to the school dean, and finally to the Provost, whose decision is final.

GPA is calculated on both a semester and cumulative basis by dividing total grade points earned by the number of credits for which a student received an F or better.

Students may repeat a course for credit if a grade of C- or less was received on the first attempt. The grade for the repeated course replaces the initial grade in the GPA calculation, provided the repeat is taken at Roger Williams University and the new grade is higher; the previous grade remains on the record but is not counted. A course may not be repeated for credit once a grade of C or higher (or Pass) has been earned.

Transfer credits are not used in calculating a student's grade point average.

Academic standings are calculated at the end of every Fall and Spring semester only. To remain in Academic Good Standing, a student must meet a minimum cumulative GPA based on cumulative credits completed, and must complete 67% of attempted cumulative credits.

Students who fail to meet these criteria are placed, in order of increasing severity, on Academic Guidance, Academic Management, Academic Hiatus (withdrawal for the subsequent semester), and ultimately Academic Dismissal. Students placed on Academic Hiatus or Academic Dismissal may appeal to the University Academic Appeals Committee.

Students who complete 12 or more credits in a semester and earn a term GPA of 3.4 or higher, with no failed courses and no Incomplete grades, are placed on the Dean's List for that semester.

A bachelor's degree requires a minimum of 120 credits distributed according to core curriculum, major, and elective requirements, completed under a catalog in effect within eight years of the graduation date. A minimum of 45 of the last 60 credit hours must be completed at Roger Williams University, and a maximum of 75 transfer credits from a regionally accredited institution may be applied. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher is required, along with any additional requirements of the student's major.

To participate in the May commencement ceremony, a student's cumulative GPA in the semester before graduation must be 2.0 or higher, and all but at most two remaining courses (or 8 credits), including Incompletes, must be satisfied.

Based on at least 54 credits of study in residence, baccalaureate degrees are awarded with the following Latin honors by cumulative GPA:

• Summa cum laude — cumulative GPA of 3.8 or higher
• Magna cum laude — cumulative GPA of 3.6 to 3.79
• Cum laude — cumulative GPA of 3.4 to 3.59

The Commencement Program lists the honors designation known at the time of printing; the diploma and final transcript reflect the official designation based on the student's final GPA.

A maximum of 75 transfer credits may be applied toward an RWU bachelor's degree; transfer credits are not used in calculating a student's GPA. Students transferring from an accredited institution must complete their final 45 credits at Roger Williams University.

For courses taken at another accredited institution prior to matriculation, credit transfers provided the course was taken at the college level, a grade of C or higher was earned in letter-graded courses, and RWU has received the official transcript. An associate degree's credits are accepted in full provided its courses carry a grade of C or higher.
