Rutgers University–Newark undergraduate schools do not award A+ and do not use minus grades (no A-, B-, C-, or D-). Beyond the letter grades, the university also records several non-letter symbols that are not counted in the GPA: W (withdrawal), IN (incomplete, converts to F if unresolved after two semesters), NG (no grade, converts to F if unresolved after one semester), P/NC (pass/no credit, excluded from the GPA), and RD/RF (reexamination permitted).

The cumulative grade-point average is computed by multiplying each course's grade points by its credits, summing those grade points, and dividing by total credits earned. Grades earned at institutions other than Rutgers and the New Jersey Institute of Technology are not calculated into the cumulative GPA.

Students who earn a D or F in up to four courses may repeat the course at Rutgers-Newark or NJIT and have the lower grade excluded from the cumulative GPA; the original D/F remains on the transcript and degree credit is awarded only once.

A student who has not been registered at Rutgers University-Newark for at least eight consecutive semesters may, upon reentry, have D and F grades from the prior enrollment period expunged from the GPA calculation (this grade forgiveness policy applies to the Newark College of Arts and Sciences, University College-Newark, School of Public Affairs and Administration, and School of Criminal Justice; the Rutgers Business School uses its own separate grade forgiveness policy).

Academic standing at Rutgers University-Newark is set at the school level rather than by a single campus-wide GPA floor. The School of Criminal Justice requires students to maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better to remain in good standing. Rutgers Business School: Undergraduate-Newark places students on academic probation automatically when their cumulative GPA falls below 2.5, and dismisses students whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 after at least one semester on probation.

Undergraduate degrees at Rutgers University-Newark require a minimum of 120 academic credits; successful completion of some programs of study may require more than the 120-credit minimum.

The Dean's List is compiled each semester for students whose letter-grade semester average is 3.5 or better (Pass/No Credit and E/N credits excluded), while completing at least 12 credits toward graduation at Newark College of Arts and Sciences or at least 6 credits at University College-Newark.

Students may graduate with Latin honors upon completing a minimum of 30 credits at the college and reaching the following cumulative GPA: Summa Cum Laude, 3.850 or better; Magna Cum Laude, 3.700 to 3.849; Cum Laude, 3.500 to 3.699.

Transfer credit is generally granted for coursework completed at a regionally accredited institution within seven years of application, with a grade of C or better; credits transfer but grades do not carry into the Rutgers cumulative GPA. At least half of the credits required for a major and second concentration at Newark College of Arts and Sciences or University College-Newark must be completed at Rutgers University-Newark.

Rutgers Business School: Undergraduate-Newark accepts a maximum of 90 transferred credits from a four-year institution (60-65 of which may come from a two-year college), subject to the Comprehensive Statewide Articulation Agreement with New Jersey community colleges.
