How grading works at UChicago
UChicago's Common Grade Policy uses a 4-point scale: A (4.0), A- (3.7), B+ (3.3), B (3.0), B- (2.7), C+ (2.3), C (2.0), C- (1.7), D+ (1.3), D (1.0), and F (0.0). Notably, there is no A+ or D- in the common scale.
This scale applies university-wide across the College and most graduate divisions (Biological, Physical, and Social Sciences, the Harris School, the Crown Family School, and the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering) — they differ from each other only in administrative-grade handling, never in point values. Three schools use their own separate scales: Chicago Booth School of Business, the Law School, and the Pritzker School of Medicine.

How your GPA is calculated at UChicago
Only grades from University of Chicago courses count toward your GPA — grades from other institutions, or from off-campus study abroad/domestic programs, don't contribute unless the course appears on your transcript with a UChicago course number.
Repeating a course doesn't erase the original grade. Both courses appear on your transcript, and both grades are averaged into your GPA.
Each quarter, you must complete 300 units of course credit with passing grades and a minimum 2.0 GPA to avoid academic probation for the following quarter.

In each quarter of registration, you must complete, by the end of the quarter, 300 units of course credit with passing grades and with a minimum GPA of 2.0. If you fail to meet this minimum, you'll ordinarily be placed on academic probation for the following quarter.

Does UChicago award an A+?
No, not as part of the Common Grade Policy. UChicago's own registrar states outright: "there is no A+ ... in the common grade scale." The one exception: a College student who cross-registers into a Chicago Booth School of Business course may see "A+" on their transcript for that course — but it's priced at 4.0 College grade points, the same value as a plain A, since it's really Booth's own grade converted into the College's GPA.

What does an Incomplete (I) or Withdrawn (W) grade do to my GPA at UChicago?
Neither carries a point value, so neither affects your GPA. An I (Incomplete) is replaced once the coursework is finished — the Registrar records the new grade but keeps the "I" as a qualifier (e.g. IA, IB+) to show it was completed late. A W (Withdrawn) "does not affect the GPA calculation" at all.

Do UChicago's Law School, Business School, or Medical School use this grading scale?
No. Chicago Booth School of Business uses its own scale (A+ = 4.33, A- = 3.67, and so on). The Law School uses a numeric-range scale (for example, 186-180 for an A), not a GPA at all. The Pritzker School of Medicine submits "P" grades in lieu of quality grades, so it has no GPA-bearing scale. None of these are covered by this calculator.
