University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) GPA Calculator

UTRGV grades undergraduate coursework on a 5-letter, 4.0 scale: A (Excellent), B (Good), C (Satisfactory), D (Below Average), and F (Failure). There are no plus or minus grades — no A+, A-, B+, or any other modifier is used.

Each hour of A earns 4 grade points, B earns 3, C earns 2, D earns 1, and F earns 0. D may not be assigned in graduate coursework.

Your GPA is total grade points earned divided by total credit hours attempted, using institutional coursework only — transferred grades are excluded (except for UT Brownsville/Texas Southmost College coursework completed by students enrolled before Fall 2017). Attempted hours include grades such as F, DR (Course Dropped), and W (Withdrawal).

If you repeat a non-repeatable course to improve your grade, only your most recent grade counts toward your GPA, even if it's lower than an earlier attempt — earlier attempts are marked “E” (excluded) on your transcript.

Undergraduate students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 to remain in good academic standing. Students placed on suspension cannot register at UTRGV until a fall or spring semester has passed.

You must also maintain an overall C average (2.0 GPA) to graduate, even though a D is passing in an individual course — and UTRGV requires a C or better in specific courses such as College Algebra, required freshman English, and your major and minor fields.

Each fall and spring semester, undergraduates enrolled in at least 12 college-level hours who earn a 4.0 semester GPA make the President's List, noted on the official transcript. Those with a 3.5 to 3.89 semester GPA make the Dean's List.

Transferred coursework is excluded from your institutional UTRGV GPA — only courses taken at UTRGV count. The one exception: coursework transferred from the University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College is included in the total GPA for students who enrolled at UTRGV before Fall 2017.
