Rhode Island College (RIC) GPA Calculator

Beyond the letter-grade scale, Rhode Island College records several notations that carry no grade points and no effect on GPA: W (Withdrawn, requires instructor permission), W/N (Never attended), W/L (Leave of absence), and W/M (Called to active military duty) all exclude credits from graduation. I (Incomplete) carries no grade points. Under the Credit/No Credit option (available only in certain elective courses), CR counts credits toward graduation with no GPA effect, while NCR counts neither credits nor GPA. AUD marks an audited course. H (Honors) and S (Satisfactory) count credits with no GPA effect; U (Unsatisfactory) counts neither.

A student may repeat a course only once, unless permission to repeat it a second time is granted by the Academic Standing Committee. Once a course is repeated, only the higher grade earned is included in the calculation of the cumulative grade point average — the original course and grade also remain on the transcript. A withdrawal (W) grade counts as a repeat attempt, except non-academic withdrawals approved by the Dean of Students or other authorized personnel. Only grades for courses repeated at Rhode Island College are adjusted.

Rhode Island College defines good academic standing as a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0, reviewed each fall and spring semester. Students whose term GPA falls below 2.0 while in good standing are placed on Academic Warning for one semester. Students below 2.0 in both term and cumulative GPA move to Academic Notice 1, then, after a term GPA of 2.0 or higher without reaching a 2.0 cumulative GPA, to Academic Notice 2. Students with 12 or more attempted credits and a cumulative GPA below 2.0 are placed on Academic Dismissal Review and must appeal to the Undergraduate Academic Standing Committee to continue; an approved appeal results in Review in Progress status with a set number of credits to return to good standing, while a denied appeal results in permanent Academic Dismissal.

Undergraduate degree candidates must complete a minimum of 120 earned credits, including a College Residency Requirement of at least 30 credits taken at RIC (at least 15 in the major, 12 of which at the 300-level or above, and 9 in the minor if applicable). Candidates need a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale, and a minimum 2.0 GPA in the major and minor.

Full-time students who attain a minimum GPA of 3.25 in any semester are placed on the Dean's List (student teachers instead need a minimum 3.0 cumulative and 3.0 semester GPA plus a Satisfactory grade in student teaching). Graduating seniors are cited with Graduation Honors at Commencement by cumulative GPA: 3.85 or higher for summa cum laude, 3.60-3.84 for magna cum laude, and 3.25-3.59 for cum laude; transfer students and second-baccalaureate candidates qualify after completing a minimum of 54 credit hours at RIC. Full-time first-year students who earn a minimum 3.5 GPA in their first semester or first year join The 3.5 Society.

Undergraduate degree candidates who plan to take a course at another college while enrolled at RIC (including CCRI and URI courses) must complete an Authorization of Credit form before registering, with permission of the department chair (or dean, for interdisciplinary courses). Credit is not posted until the official transcript is received by the Registrar's Office; students receiving financial aid should confirm continued eligibility before taking courses elsewhere.
