Stanislaus State grades on a 4.0 scale with a full plus/minus range: A (4.0), A- (3.7), B+ (3.3), B (3.0), B- (2.7), C+ (2.3), C (2.0), C- (1.7), D+ (1.3), D (1.0), and D- (0.7), down to F (0.0). There is no A+ anywhere in the system.

A WU (Withdrawal Unauthorized) grade is also computed into your GPA at 0.0 grade points, the same as an F — it is used when an enrolled student neither officially withdrew nor completed the course requirements.

Several other marks appear on a transcript but carry no grade points and are not computed in your GPA, including AU (Audit), CR (Credit), I (Incomplete), NC (No Credit), RD (Report Delayed), RP (Report in Progress), and W (Withdrawn).

Your GPA is computed by multiplying units and grade points for courses graded A, B, C, D, F, and WU, then dividing by the graded units attempted. Prebaccalaureate courses and courses marked AU, CR, I, NC, RD, RP, or W are excluded from the calculation. Plus/minus grading is a faculty option, applied consistently to an entire class when used.

Undergraduates may only repeat a course if they earned below a C. Up to 16 semester units can be repeated with grade forgiveness (the new grade replaces the old one in your GPA, limited to two repeats per course), plus an additional 12 units with grades averaged (both grades count toward your GPA). Graduate students may repeat a course by prior department permission; the original grade stays in the overall GPA but is excluded from the GPA computed for the master's degree.

Academic renewal can exclude old unsatisfactory grades from your GPA if at least five years have passed, you've since completed enough units at Stanislaus State with a qualifying GPA (15 units at 3.0, 30 units at 2.5, or 45 units at 2.0), and you petition and gain faculty/dean/Provost approval — up to one academic year of coursework can be disregarded.

You're placed on Academic Notice (Stanislaus State's term for probation) if your cumulative GPA — in all college-level work attempted, or in coursework at Stanislaus State — falls below 2.0. You're removed from notice once both cumulative GPAs reach 2.0 or higher.

While on Academic Notice, you become subject to Academic Disqualification if your cumulative GPA falls below a threshold that rises with your class standing: 1.50 as a freshman (under 30 semester hours completed), 1.70 as a sophomore (30–59), 1.85 as a junior (60–89), or 1.95 as a senior or postbaccalaureate student (90+). A student not on notice can still be disqualified if cumulative GPA falls below 1.0 and the deficiency seems unlikely to be resolved within a reasonable period.

Disqualified students may petition the Academic Success Center for reinstatement, though it's generally not granted for the semester immediately following disqualification; reinstated students return on notice status regardless of GPA earned elsewhere.

Each semester, undergraduates who complete at least 12 units of graded coursework with a 3.5 term GPA at Stanislaus State are named to the Dean's List. Students completing 8–11 graded units with the same 3.5 term GPA receive honorable mention.
