California State University, San Marcos (CSUSM) GPA Calculator

Your GPA is computed by multiplying the units earned in each course by that grade's quality-point value, then dividing the total quality points by the units attempted. Plus/minus grading is used at each instructor's discretion — it is not required campus-wide.

Credit (CR) is awarded for a grade equivalent to C or better; No Credit (NC) for C- or below. Up to 15 semester units of CR/NC coursework may count toward an undergraduate degree, and CR/NC grades are excluded from the GPA.

W (Withdrawal), RD (Report Delayed), and AU (Audit) are not counted in the GPA. IC (Incomplete Charged) is counted as a failing grade, and WU (Withdrawal Unauthorized) is counted as units attempted but not passed, when computing the GPA — though neither symbol carries its own published grade-point value.

You may repeat a CSUSM course only if you earned below a C (2.0), and ordinarily no more than twice. Up to 16 semester units may be repeated for Grade Forgiveness (the new grade replaces the old in your GPA); beyond that, up to 12 additional semester units may be repeated for Grade Averaging (both grades count).

You're placed on academic notice (probation) if your overall GPA or cumulative CSUSM GPA falls below 2.0 in any term, and removed from notice once both are 2.0 or higher.

If you're already on academic notice, you're subject to academic disqualification when your term GPA falls below 2.0 and your cumulative GPA is also below a class-standing floor: 1.50 as a freshman (under 30 units), 1.70 as a sophomore (30-59 units), 1.85 as a junior (60-89 units), or 1.95 as a senior (90+ units).

If you're not on academic notice, you're disqualified outright when your cumulative GPA falls below 1.0 and is unlikely to recover within a reasonable period. Disqualified students are ordinarily required to wait one semester before petitioning for reinstatement.

Under CSUSM's Academic Renewal policy — available if your graduation is delayed solely by a GPA deficiency — a petition requires that all degree requirements except earning at least a "C" (2.0) grade point average have been or will soon be met, confirming 2.0 as the cumulative GPA standard your degree completion is measured against. Academic Renewal itself lets up to two semesters (or three quarters) of prior coursework be disregarded from that calculation, once you've since achieved a strong CSUSM record (for example, at least 15 units at 3.00+ GPA).

Undergraduates who complete at least 12 units of graded CSUSM coursework (A, B, C, D, F) in a semester with at least a 3.50 GPA that term qualify for the Dean's List.

Latin Honors at graduation are based on the lower of your institutional (CSUSM) GPA and your Overall GPA (including transfer coursework): Cum Laude at 3.5 up to 3.7, Magna Cum Laude at 3.7 up to 3.9, and Summa Cum Laude at 3.9 or higher. Second baccalaureate candidates are not eligible.
