GPA Calculation & Course Repetition
Each semester hour of "A" counts four grade points, "B" three, "C" two, "D" one, and "F" zero. The semester GPA is computed by dividing total grade points earned by the number of semester hours of courses graded A, B, C, D, or F (FN computes as an F).
If a student repeats a course not authorized for additional credit, only the last grade received counts toward the cumulative GPA (other than a grade of "W" or "WS"); grades stand as recorded unless the course is repeated at this university.

Good Standing, Probation & Suspension
Good academic standing requires an institutional cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. A student whose institutional cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 at the end of a fall or spring semester is placed on academic probation and given one additional semester to reach 2.0.
A student who fails to reach 2.0 during that semester is placed on academic suspension, must sit out one long semester, and may re-enroll under probation with an academic improvement plan, or appeal via a petition for academic reinstatement.

Minimum GPA & Requirements for Graduation
An overall grade average of "C" (2.0) or higher on all work attempted is required for a bachelor's degree, and (for transfer students) on work attempted at TAMIU; the major and minor fields also require a "C" (2.0) average on TAMIU coursework. Bachelor's degrees require a minimum of 120 semester credit hours.
Bachelor's degree candidates must be in residence at TAMIU for at least 25% of required semester credit hours and complete a minimum of 45 semester hours of advanced (3000-4000 level) coursework.

Frequently asked questions
What grading scheme does Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) use?
Where does this TAMIU grade scale come from?
Does this grading scale apply to graduate and Nursing programs?
No. This page reflects TAMIU's undergraduate grading scale. The Graduate Academic Regulations publish a separate default scale for graduate coursework (a merged "D/F" grade for any mark below 70, with no separate passing "D"), and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences Graduate Nursing Program uses a third scale (A, B, C only, with "F" for any mark below 70). The College of Education's graduate scale matches the undergraduate scale shown on this page.
