Carleton University GPA Calculator

Carleton records standing in a course as a letter grade, determined by the course instructor and subject to approval by the faculty Dean. Letter grades run from A+ down to F on a 12-point scale — the full grade-to-point mapping is shown in the Grade Scale Reference above. Grade points are set for a 1.0-credit course; for a course worth more or less than one credit, the grade points are adjusted proportionately.

Each letter grade also has a printed percentage-conversion band, but the percentage is a conversion aid, not the official recorded standing — the letter grade is what's shown on the transcript. If an instructor's own percentage-to-letter conversion in a specific course deviates from the standard bands, they must say so in the course outline.

Your Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is the ratio of the grade points you've earned to the total credit value of those courses — each course's grade points are multiplied by its credit value, summed, and divided by the total credits. The CGPA is truncated to two decimal places, never rounded (a computed 5.297 displays as 5.29, not 5.30).

• An F grade stays in your CGPA calculation until it's removed through repeating or replacing the course.
• When you repeat a course, only the best grade counts toward your CGPA. This applies to direct repeats and cross-listed courses, but not to precluded courses.
• Credits granted through advanced standing or the University of Ottawa Exchange are included in your CGPA.
• Courses marked Extra to the Degree (ETD), No Credit for Degree (NCD), Satisfactory (SAT), Withdrawn (WDN), Unsatisfactory (UNS), or Forfeit are excluded from the CGPA.

Carleton reviews every degree student's Overall CGPA at each Academic Continuation Evaluation (ACE) against a minimum required for their program and credit range. The minimum varies by program: for most Honours programs it's Overall 4.00 between 5.5 and 15.25 credits completed, rising to Overall 5.00 from 15.5 credits on; Engineering requires Overall 5.00 throughout; 15- and 20-credit Non-Honours programs require Overall 4.00.

• Academic Warning (AW) — your CGPA is below your program's minimum; you must raise it to the required term GPA by the next evaluation to clear the warning.
• Required to Withdraw for Two Terms (WT) — applied if your Overall CGPA falls below 1.00, or you fail to clear an Academic Warning.
• Some limited-enrolment professional programs use Continue in Alternate (CA) (CGPA at least 1.00) or Dismissed from Program (DP) (CGPA below 1.00) instead of WT.

Students entering their first year with no prior post-secondary study get a First Year Grading Policy for their first two terms: any F or UNS grade automatically converts to NR (not shown on the transcript), and up to 2.0 credits of passing grades may convert to CR at the student's request.

To graduate, you must present at least 5.0 residency credits earned at Carleton (half the program total for Dual Degree, B.Eng., B.I.D., and B.I.T.; 13.5 credits for B.Sc.N. with RN Prescribing).

The minimum graduation CGPA depends on your degree type:

• Honours degrees: Overall CGPA 5.00, Major CGPA 6.50.
• Engineering degrees: Overall CGPA 5.00 (Major CGPA not used).
• 15- and 20-credit Non-Honours degrees: Overall and Major CGPA 4.00.
• B.Com. Non-Honours degree: Overall and Major CGPA 5.00.
• Post-Baccalaureate Diploma: CGPA 6.50.

To earn a Concentration or Specialization, Honours students need a CGPA of 6.50 or higher in it at graduation; Non-Honours students need 4.00 or higher. A Minor requires a CGPA of 4.00 or higher at graduation.

Graduating undergraduates who have completed at least 10.0 credits toward the degree at Carleton University are recognized for exceptional academic achievement based on their Overall CGPA:

• High Distinction — Overall CGPA equal to or greater than 10.40.
• Distinction — Overall CGPA less than 10.40 and equal to or greater than 9.80.

Both designations are recorded on the student's transcript and diploma.

Credits granted through advanced standing (transfer from another institution) or a formal Exchange, such as the University of Ottawa Exchange, are included in your CGPA calculation the same as courses taken at Carleton.

To count toward graduation, a minimum share of your credits must be completed at Carleton (or within the last ten years via advanced standing or exchange) at a specified level: at least 3.0 credits in the major at the 3000-level or above for Honours degrees (1.5 credits in each major for Combined Honours); at least 3.0 credits at the 2000-level or above for 20.0-credit Major degrees and for 15.0-credit degrees.
