Ave Maria University grades undergraduates on a 4.0 scale with both grade points and a matching percentage range for every letter: A (4.00, 93-100), A- (3.70, 90-92), B+ (3.30, 87-89), B (3.00, 83-86), B- (2.70, 80-82), C+ (2.30, 77-79), C (2.00, 73-76), C- (1.70, 70-72), D+ (1.30, 67-69), D (1.00, 63-66), D- (0.70, 60-62), and F (0.00, 59 and below).

There is no A+ — A, at 4.00, is the top of the scale.

A Pass (P) grade may be issued for extraordinary circumstances and an Audit (AU) grade may also be recorded; neither is used in GPA computation.

Your academic standing is measured by the Quality Grade Point Average (QGPA): multiply each course's credit hours by the grade's numerical value to get that course's quality points, add up all quality points, then divide by the total credit hours attempted.

If you repeat a course in which you earned a W or a grade below C, the last grade earned stands as your official grade and is what counts toward your cumulative GPA (all attempts still show on the transcript). Courses may only be repeated twice.

To stay in good academic standing, students with 16 credits or fewer need a cumulative GPA of at least 1.7; students with 17 credits or more need at least 2.0.

Falling below the applicable minimum generally results in academic probation, with one semester to return to good standing before academic dismissal. Students who earn a 3.65 GPA or better on a full-time course load (14+ credits) in a semester are placed on the Dean's List.

To earn a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Science in Nursing, students must complete the Core Curriculum, their major requirements, and a minimum of 128 credit hours total.

A cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 is required both overall and in the major (minors also require a 2.0 GPA); some majors set a higher requirement. Transfer students must complete at least 32 credit hours at Ave Maria University, and length of study must not exceed seven years.

• Cum laude — cumulative GPA between 3.6 and 3.749
• Magna cum laude — cumulative GPA between 3.75 and 3.899
• Summa cum laude — cumulative GPA of 3.9 and above

A minimum of 64 credits must be taken while enrolled at Ave Maria University to qualify for these honors.

Credit from other accredited institutions can be applied toward Ave Maria University requirements if you earned at least a C in the course. Neither transfer credit hours nor transfer grades are used in calculating your cumulative GPA — only the total accepted hours appear on the transcript.
