How GPA and CGPA are calculated

GPA is the weighted average of the grade points earned in all courses passed or completed in a semester; CGPA is the same weighted average taken cumulatively across all semesters to date. Both are rounded to two decimal places.

'F' grades are excluded from the GPA/CGPA calculation entirely — they are not counted in either the credit total or the grade-point total of the average, rather than simply contributing a zero. An 'F' still stays permanently on the grade sheet and transcript, and the course is treated as a backlog course that must be repeated (compulsory for a Core Course; a repeat or substitute course is allowed for an Optional Course).

A 'D' grade may be repeated for grade improvement only if the student's CGPA has fallen below 2.20; the higher of the two grades obtained is kept.

The maximum grade obtainable in a Backlog Examination is capped at B (B Regular); the maximum grade obtainable in a Short Semester Examination (available once per student, in the final year only) is capped at B+ (B Plus).

Support for academically weak students

Students whose CGPA falls below 2.20 at the end of a semester receive special contact from their academic adviser, as part of measures intended to help them complete their studies within the maximum allowed period.

Backlog Examinations are held after the Even semester results are published; students may sit for a maximum of 3 backlog courses in an academic year (4th-year students may choose which 3 of their backlog courses to sit).

A Short Semester Examination — covering backlog courses only — is available once per student's academic life, to final-year students with a shortage of at most 5 incomplete courses (including sessional, project, and thesis) needed to complete the Bachelor degree.

Minimum CGPA and time limit for the Bachelor degree

The minimum CGPA required to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (or Bachelor of Urban & Regional Planning, or Bachelor of Architecture) degree at RUET is 2.20, alongside the minimum credit requirement set for the specific curriculum.

Students must complete their studies within a maximum of 7 academic years for a 4-year Bachelor degree, or 8 academic years for a 5-year Bachelor degree (e.g. Architecture).

Honours, class, VC's List, and Gold Medal

A Bachelor's degree is awarded with Honours (First Class with Honours) to candidates with a final CGPA of 3.75 or above.

Candidates with a CGPA of 3.00 or above (but below 3.75) graduate as First Class; a CGPA of 2.20 or above (but below 3.00) graduates as Second Class.

Students who maintain an SGPA of 3.75 or above in both regular semesters of an academic year, with no 'F' grade in either semester, may be named to the Vice-Chancellor's List for their department that year.

A University Gold Medal is awarded to a student who obtains 'A' or better in every course attempted while meeting the credit requirements for graduation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at RUET?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at RUET?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
Why might my calculated CGPA differ from RUET's official transcript?

RUET's own Academic Ordinance excludes 'F' grades from the GPA/CGPA calculation entirely — a failed course is dropped from both the credit total and the grade-point total of the average, rather than being averaged in at its 0.00 grade point. This calculator, like most GPA tools, includes every entered grade (F included, at 0.00) in the weighted average, which will produce a lower figure than RUET's own computation for a transcript that contains any 'F' grade still pending repeat. RUET's transcript keeps the 'F' permanently on record as a backlog course regardless of how the average is computed.
