How DUET grades courses

DUET uses a 10-point letter-grade scale from A+ (4.00) to F (0.00), set by the university's Academic Ordinance for Undergraduate Studies. Both semester GPA and cumulative GPA are rounded to two decimal places for reporting.

An 'F' grade earns no credit and no grade points, but stays permanently on the grade sheet and transcript. Non-credit courses are recorded as satisfactory (S) or unsatisfactory (U) and never affect GPA. Project/thesis courses spanning two semesters carry an 'X' grade until finalized.

Repeating courses to improve GPA

A student who earns an 'F' in a core course must repeat it; an 'F' in an optional course may be repeated or replaced with a substitute. A repeated 'F'-graded course is capped at a 'B' on re-take.

A 'D' grade may be repeated for improvement only while cumulative GPA is below 2.20. Once cumulative GPA reaches 2.20 or higher, courses graded 'C' or better can no longer be repeated for grade improvement.

Academic probation and suspension

Good standing requires a semester GPA of at least 2.20 and earned credits of at least 15 times the number of semesters attended. Falling below either threshold, or a cumulative GPA below 2.20, places a student on academic probation for at least one semester (usually one academic year).

A student who fails to bring their GPA back to 2.20 or above within two consecutive academic years of probation may be suspended. A first suspension may be reinstated on petition; a second is final.

Requirements to graduate

A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.20 is required to obtain the B.Sc. Engineering degree, alongside the credit requirements set by each department. Students may take up to 15 additional credits beyond the normal requirement to raise their cumulative GPA.

Students must complete the degree within a maximum of 7 academic years.

Honours, Dean's List, and Gold Medal

Graduates with a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or above receive their Bachelor's degree with Honours. Students who maintain a semester GPA of 3.75 or above with no 'F' grades may be named to the Dean's List for that year.

The University Gold Medal goes to the top-ranked graduate of each department with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.75, no 'F' grades ever, and completion within 4 consecutive academic years.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at DUET?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at DUET?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Dhaka University of Engineering & Technology (DUET) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
Does this grading scale apply to DUET's postgraduate programs?

No. This page reflects DUET's undergraduate (B.Sc. Engineering) grading scale. Postgraduate programs, such as those in the Institute of Energy Engineering, use a separate 6-grade scale with different percentage bands and grade points.
