National University, Bangladesh GPA Calculator

National University's Bachelor (Honours) programme follows the Uniform Grading System provided by the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, effective from the 2009-2010 academic year, converting marks obtained in theory, practical, and viva voce examinations into a letter grade and grade point.

Effective from the 2013-2014 academic year, each theory credit course is marked out of 100: 20% (15% in-course exams + 5% class attendance) plus 80% for the theory final examination. Class attendance itself is scored on a sliding scale from 0.00 (below 45% attendance) up to 5.00 (90% or above attendance).

A student must pass every prescribed course (theory and practical) and the viva voce with at least 40% marks, a D grade, or grade point 2.00. Only courses in which a D grade or higher is earned are counted toward the credit result; the grade obtained in the non-credit English course is excluded from the GPA calculation entirely.

GPA for a year is the total grade points secured (grade point x credits, summed across courses) divided by total credits earned that year; CGPA sums the total points secured across all years and divides by total credits completed in the whole programme. A grade below D earns no credit and is recorded as F; if an F is later upgraded, the credit is added into the CGPA, but once a course is upgraded out of F no further improvement attempt is allowed for it.

A student needs at least 75% attendance in lecture/practical classes to sit the Honours examination; with the department head's recommendation, attendance between 60% and 75% may still be permitted, subject to a non-collegiate fee.

Promotion to the next year requires participation in every course's exam, plus a D grade or higher in at least 3 theory courses (1st to 2nd year, and 2nd to 3rd year) or at least 4 theory courses (3rd to 4th year); a student absent in exactly one course who clears all others may be conditionally promoted but must still sit that course the following year. A student who misses these thresholds is 'Not Promoted' and may only re-sit the previous year's F-graded/absent courses plus up to 2 C/D-graded courses for grade improvement. A student who has not cleared all 1st-year courses may sit the 3rd-year final but its result is withheld; one who has not cleared all 1st- and 2nd-year courses may not sit the 4th-year exam at all.

Both promoted and not-promoted students may attempt a quality-improvement exam in up to 2 C/D-graded courses per year in a later year; an F-graded course may be resat multiple times, and the higher of two attempts is used for CGPA ('pick-up' method), but a course upgraded out of F can never be raised above a B+. No grade improvement is allowed for in-course, viva voce, or practical exam components.

The final result is published on a CGPA basis. A student must sit every theory/practical/term-paper/fieldwork exam and viva voce, earn at least a minimum overall CGPA of 2.00, and separately earn grade point 2.00 in each viva voce; failing the viva voce GP requirement allows a retake with the next batch, subject to registration still being valid.

Any course graded F must be upgraded to D or higher within the 6-academic-year registration period, or the student does not receive the Honours degree at all; an upgraded F-graded course can never be raised above B+.

A student who still has F grades at the end of the registration period but has earned at least 100 credits is instead awarded a Pass Degree. Likewise, a student who completes the 4-year Honours course with an F in some course but CGPA of 2.00 or above may be given a Pass Degree — but a student absent from any course's exam receives no degree at all.

A student with a CGPA from 3.75 to 4.00 is awarded the Honours degree with Distinction, noted on the academic transcript.
