How grading works at Fanshawe College
Fanshawe College grades most courses as a percentage (0-100), which maps to a letter grade and a grade point on a scale that runs up to 4.2, not the more common 4.0 — see the Grade Scale Reference above for the exact bands.
Every course is designated either "Graded" or "Pass/Fail." The minimum grade to pass a graded course is 50%, unless a higher floor has been separately approved by the Senior Vice-President, Academic.

How Fanshawe College calculates your GPA
Your GPA is a Weighted GPA Average: each course's grade point is weighted by that course's Credit Units (a value based on course hours and instructional method, not simply 1 credit per course), summed and divided by your total Credit Units. Fanshawe reports a Term GPA (courses completed in one term) and a Cumulative GPA (the program curriculum to that point).
Only nine grades count toward GPA: A+, A, B+, B, C+, C, D+, D, and F. Pass (P), Incomplete (I), No Credit Achieved (N), Withdrawn (W), and Audit (X) all carry no grade-point value and are excluded entirely. Internal Credits and External Credits are not used in GPA calculations, while credit granted through Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is used in the Cumulative GPA "as appropriate."
Repeating a course: the highest grade achieved is used to calculate your Cumulative GPA.
Clinical placements, co-op placements, and Field Experience courses are Pass/Fail only and are never counted in the GPA. A Field Placement course counts toward the GPA only if the school or campus chooses to letter-grade it.

Academic standing and probation at Fanshawe College
Academic Probation can result from "more than one of the required courses are assigned a failing grade and an unacceptable grade point average," from two failed required courses, or from repeated probation standings.
A student is "required to re-apply" to their program if, among other triggers, they have two or more prior academic-probation standings, one or two failing required courses together with a GPA below 1.26, three or more failing required courses together with a GPA below 1.76, or a GPA below 1.26 for two consecutive semesters.
Within a term, a GPA between roughly 1.26 and 1.75 brings a risk-of-failure notice and probation placement; a term GPA of 1.25 or below places a student on academic probation requiring the Academic Manager's permission to continue.
Applied Degree programs set a separate bar: students must maintain a minimum average of 2.5 (C+) in vocational courses and 2.0 (C) in all other courses.

The College may set a higher minimum GPA for a specific program, with approval from the Senior Vice-President, Academic, "based on such factors as the need to demonstrate enhanced mastery in specific subject matters."
