How Dalhousie grades undergraduate courses
Dalhousie's official grading system is a letter-grade system. Each letter grade carries a grade point value used in the GPA, and the calendar prints a percentage range beside each letter.
- FM (Marginal Failure, 0.00 grade points) is available only in Engineering, Health Professions and Commerce.
- INC (Incomplete) carries 0.00 grade points.
- W, ILL, P, TR, Pending, MT, CR and NCR are GPA-neutral notations.
- A D is a marginal pass, except in programs that require a minimum grade of C or C+.

How your GPA is calculated
Multiply the grade points earned in each course by the course's credit hours, add these together, and divide by the total credit hours attempted.
- A term GPA includes only the courses attempted in one term; the cumulative GPA includes all courses attempted while registered in a level of study.
- If a course is repeated, only the highest grade is included in the GPA. A repeated passed course gives no additional credit, and the original grade stays on the transcript.
- Credit/No Credit (CR/NCR) is a GPA-neutral option granted by academic waiver for exceptional extenuating circumstances.

- Distinction: a cumulative GPA of at least 3.70, counting all courses taken in the level of study (including repeated and failed courses), with at least half the courses completed at Dalhousie.

Transfer credit and Letters of Permission
Transfer credits granted on admission count as credits without grade points, so they are neutral in the GPA.
For courses taken on a Letter of Permission at a Canadian university that uses letter grades, the matching Dalhousie letter grade and grade points are assigned; grades from institutions without letter grades are translated into a Dalhousie grade. Courses taken outside Canada are recorded as P (pass) or F (fail).
