De Anza College GPA Calculator

De Anza grades on a plus/minus letter scale: A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, D+, D, D- and F. There is no C- grade anywhere in De Anza's scale.

Each grade carries a fixed grade-point value. A+ and A are both worth 4.0 — De Anza never awards more than 4.0 points for any grade. From there the scale runs A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D- 0.7, down to F at 0.

De Anza also assigns FW (worth 0 points, the same as F) when a student stops participating in a course after the withdrawal deadline without an approved excused or military withdrawal.

Credit is measured in quarter units — De Anza runs on the quarter system, with summer sessions tracked separately from the three regular quarters.

Only De Anza's evaluative grades count toward your GPA: A+ through F, plus FW.

Several other marks are never counted in your GPA, even though they appear on your record. P (Pass) and NP (No Pass) explicitly carry no GPA weight. The nonevaluative symbols I (Incomplete), IP (In Progress), RD (Report Delayed), W (Withdrawal), EW (Excused Withdrawal) and MW (Military Withdrawal) are likewise excluded from GPA calculation.

Noncredit courses are not recorded on your transcript and are never calculated into your GPA.

You'll be placed on Academic Probation if your cumulative GPA (across all De Anza coursework) falls below 2.0. An initial period of probation lasts one quarter; you come off probation once your cumulative GPA reaches 2.0 or higher. If your quarterly GPA stays at 2.0 or above but your cumulative GPA is still below 2.0, you remain at the same probation level; if your quarterly GPA also falls below 2.0, you move to the next probation level.

You'll be placed on Progress Probation if you've enrolled in at least 18 quarter units and received grades of F, W, I, NP or NC for 50% or more of those units. You come off progress probation once that percentage drops below 50%.

Dismissal follows if either condition persists for five consecutive quarters (excluding summer sessions) — a cumulative GPA below 2.0 the whole time, or F/W/I/NP/NC grades at 50% or more of units for five straight quarters. Students may petition to appeal or for reinstatement after a quarter.

Having a cumulative GPA below 2.0, or a completion rate below 51%, for two or more quarters can also affect eligibility for financial aid or veterans' benefits.

Degrees and certificates are awarded at the end of each quarter or summer session. You must submit an online application for your intended degree or certificate to the Evaluations Department of the Admissions and Records Office. Students seeking an Associate Degree for Transfer (A.A.-T or A.S.-T) should contact a counselor or academic adviser.

De Anza recommends running a degree audit through Degree Works and, during the quarter before your planned graduation quarter, reviewing your completed coursework against your degree or certificate requirements — leaving time to adjust your schedule if needed.

Students with a cumulative De Anza GPA between 3.30 and 4.00 are awarded associate degree honors at graduation:

• 4.00 — Highest Honors (Summa Cum Laude)
• 3.50–3.99 — High Honors (Magna Cum Laude)
• 3.30–3.49 — Honors (Cum Laude)

If you're transferring from another regionally accredited institution, you can request that credit from that school count toward your De Anza requirements. Evaluation isn't automatic: you must first complete 12 units at De Anza and be currently registered before an official transcript will be evaluated, and only lower-division (freshman/sophomore-level) transfer credit is evaluated.

Official transcripts must come directly from the transfer institution, or be delivered to the Admissions and Records Office as a sealed, official copy. A separate prerequisite-clearance process (an unofficial transcript plus a clearance form) is used if you just need prior coursework recognized as meeting a course prerequisite — it does not evaluate the coursework for transfer credit.
