Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) GPA Calculator

Grade point average (GPA) is computed by multiplying the hours of credit in each course by the numerical value of the grade earned to find quality points, totaling the quality points earned, then dividing by the total semester hours taken — excluding any course in which a W, I, N, P, T, or L was received, since none of these marks carries a numerical value or counts toward the GPA.

It is the option of each faculty member whether or not to incorporate plus/minus values into their course's grading scale; the course syllabus specifies which scale applies.

Students may repeat a previously taken DMACC course if it is currently offered. When a course is repeated, only the hours and grade point value of the last grade earned are included in calculating the GPA; earlier grades for the repeated course remain on the transcript record but are excluded from the GPA calculation. Withdrawing from a repeated course with a grade of W does not count as a course repeat.

A cumulative grade point average of 2.00 in all course work applicable to the degree, diploma, or certificate of specialization is required for satisfactory progress. Satisfactory academic progress requires both a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher and completion of 67% or more of cumulative attempted credits.

A student falling below either threshold is placed on Academic Warning; continued shortfall the next semester moves the student to Conditional Enrollment, which requires meeting an advisor to complete an Academic Improvement Plan. A student on Conditional Enrollment who again falls short is placed on Academic Disqualification, and may appeal that placement to the Academic Reinstatement Committee before re-enrolling.

Students who earn 6 or more credits in a semester with a 3.50 to 3.99 grade point average are named to the Executive Academic Dean's List. Students who earn 6 or more credits in a semester with a 4.00 grade point average are named to the President's List.

A maximum of 43 semester credit hours of transfer credit is applicable toward associate degree requirements; for diploma and certificate programs, up to two-thirds of program credits may transfer in, with at least one-third earned at DMACC. The total grade point average of credits transferred to DMACC must equal 2.00 or higher. Grades earned at other colleges or universities are not used in the computation of a student's grade point average at DMACC.
