Northwest Missouri State University GPA Calculator

Beyond the four-point letter grades, Northwest also records several marks that carry no grade points and are never counted in the GPA:

• AT — audit
• I — incomplete
• IP — in progress, used only for courses spanning more than one semester (high school dual enrollment, outreach, and study abroad courses)
• NC — no credit
• P — pass, under the pass/fail option
• W — official withdrawal from the university

A grade point average is computed by dividing total grade points earned by the number of semester hours of academic work attempted. Grades of NC, W, I, IP, and P are not computed in the GPA.

Students with transfer credit carry three separate GPAs: the Northwest GPA (Northwest coursework only), the Transfer GPA (transferred coursework only), and the Cumulative GPA (both combined). The Northwest GPA alone determines eligibility for internal scholarships; the Cumulative GPA alone is used for the teacher certification GPA, class rank, and the GPA shown at graduation.

A student who earns a C, D, or F may repeat the course to raise the grade, up to two times (three attempts total). All attempts remain on the record, but only the highest grade earned counts toward the cumulative GPA. A grade earned at Northwest cannot be superseded by completing an equivalent course at another institution.

The pass/fail option is available to students who have completed one full-time term at Northwest and hold a Northwest cumulative GPA of at least 2.00. Pass/fail is capped at nine hours total, is not permitted for major/minor, Core, teacher-certification, or pre-professional requirements, cannot be used for graduate-level courses, and cannot be used to supersede a prior grade.

A student's academic status — good standing, probation, suspension, or dismissal — is determined using both the Northwest GPA and the cumulative GPA.

A baccalaureate degree will not be awarded while an in-progress (IP) grade remains on a student's record at the end of the term of graduation. An IP grade that is not resolved becomes a failing grade on the permanent record.

Graduation honors — summa cum laude, magna cum laude, and cum laude — are determined using both the Northwest GPA and the cumulative GPA.

The Transfer GPA is computed solely on coursework transferred in from other institutions, separately from the Northwest GPA and the Cumulative GPA. Pass/fail hours transferred in from another institution count toward the student's overall nine-hour pass/fail limit at Northwest.
