Grade Notations
Beyond the standard A–F letter grades, Western Oregon University uses several non-point grade notations:
- P (Pass) — used in courses where no letter grade is assigned.
- S (Satisfactory) — elective Satisfactory/No Credit option; the satisfactory threshold is equivalent to a grade of D- or better.
- NC (No Credit) — no credit earned.
- I (Incomplete) — an essential course requirement was not completed for reasons acceptable to the instructor.
- RP (Regular Progress) — used only in courses extending past the regular term end; replaced with a standard letter grade once work is complete.
- X — no basis for grade (non-attendance or no gradable work); the student must re-register for the course.
- W — withdrawal from a course after the fourth week of the term.
- AU — audit.
Only grades of A through D-, S, or P count as credit hours applied toward a degree.

How the GPA Is Calculated
The cumulative grade-point average is the sum of grade points earned per credit hour across all graded courses, divided by the total credit hours in which those grades were received.
Marks of I, P, NC, W, X, S, RP, and AU are not included in the GPA calculation.
When a course is repeated, only the credits and grade from the most recent attempt are used in the GPA, even if an earlier attempt earned a higher grade.

Academic Standing, Probation & Suspension
A student is in good academic standing while maintaining a GPA of 2.00 or better and making progress toward degree requirements.
If a student's cumulative GPA falls below 2.00 but the term GPA is 2.00 or higher, the student is placed on continued probation until the cumulative GPA reaches 2.00. If the term GPA then falls below 2.00 while on continued probation, the student is placed on academic suspension.
A student suspended a second time must take a one-year (four-term) leave from the university, complete at least 24 transferable community-college credits with a GPA of 2.50 or higher, or successfully petition the university review committee for a waiver.

Incomplete & Regular Progress Grades at Graduation
An unresolved Incomplete (I) or Regular Progress (RP) grade may prevent graduation if the default grade lowers a student's GPA or leaves a degree requirement unmet. Students are encouraged to resolve these grades as early as possible.

Honors Distinctions & Honor Rolls
Undergraduate honors distinctions at graduation require at least 45 credit hours earned at WOU on an A–F basis: cum laude for a cumulative GPA of 3.50–3.64, magna cum laude for 3.65–3.79, and summa cum laude for 3.80–4.00.
Honors Program graduates with at least a 3.25 cumulative WOU GPA earn the in cursu honorum distinction on their diploma and transcript.
President's Honor Roll requires at least 12 graded hours (A through D-) and a term GPA of 4.00; Dean's Honor Roll requires the same course load with a term GPA of at least 3.50. A grade of F or NC in the term precludes eligibility for either.

Re-enrollment After Coursework Elsewhere
Students who leave WOU and complete coursework at another institution must have earned a GPA of 2.0 or higher there and remain eligible to return to that institution before WOU re-enrollment will be considered. Official transcripts of all work attempted since leaving WOU must be on file with the Office of the Registrar.
