Savannah State University (SSU) GPA Calculator

The cumulative grade point average is calculated by dividing the total number of grade points (quality points) earned in academic courses by the total number of academic credit hours attempted at Savannah State University. Credits by examination, credits that carry S/U grades, and credits specifically excluded by university policy are not used in computing the cumulative grade point average.

Students may repeat courses in which grades D, F, or WF were earned. The highest grade counts toward the grade point average for degree requirements; if the same grade is earned again, the most recent grade counts. Earned hours apply only once toward graduation requirements, and all attempted courses and grades remain on the transcript even though previous attempts are excluded from GPA calculations.

At the end of each semester the Office of the Registrar computes cumulative institutional GPA to determine academic standing. Minimum GPA for good standing: 1.5 for freshmen (0-29 attempted hours), 1.75 for sophomores (30-59 attempted hours), and 2.0 for juniors and seniors (60+ attempted hours).

Students below the minimum are placed on Academic Warning (still good standing, but limited to 13 credit hours). Continued shortfall moves a student to Academic Probation (same 13-hour cap, advisor meeting required, no representing the University or holding office). A student who still fails to reach the minimum GPA after a probationary semester is subject to Academic Suspension: first suspension requires sitting out one semester, second suspension two semesters, and a third suspension may lead to academic expulsion. Readmission after suspension requires an application to the Registrar and an appeal to Academic Affairs.

All undergraduates earning an Associate or Baccalaureate degree must complete the required semester hours (60 for Associate, 120 for Bachelor), maintain a cumulative institutional and overall GPA of 2.0, complete all outstanding Incomplete (I) grades, and meet residency requirements (25% of coursework and 50% of the major must be completed at SSU for Bachelor degrees).

To participate in commencement, undergraduates need no more than 6 remaining semester hours, a graduation application filed by the deadline, and a minimum GPA of 2.0 (3.0 for graduate/Master's candidates).

Full-time students (12+ hours) qualify each semester for: Honor Roll (GPA 3.0-3.49), Dean's List (GPA 3.50-3.99), or President's List (GPA 4.0).

Undergraduates earning their first degree may graduate with honors based on overall GPA: Cum Laude (3.25-3.49), Magna Cum Laude (3.5-3.74), or Summa Cum Laude (3.75-4.00). Students awarded Academic Renewal are not eligible to graduate with honors.

Savannah State University students who are concurrently enrolled in courses for credit at another institution may not transfer such credit to Savannah State unless the appropriate dean or designated representative gives written authorization in advance.
