Special and Non-Letter Grades at WMU
Alongside the honor-points letter scale, WMU records several non-letter notations. X marks unofficial withdrawal — a student who never attended or stopped attending — and counts the same as E (0.0) in the GPA. W is an official withdrawal with no academic penalty. I (Incomplete) is temporary and not figured into the GPA until resolved; if not removed within one calendar year it converts to E for undergraduate courses or X for graduate courses. AU (Audit) and CR/NC (credit/no credit) carry no GPA effect.

How the GPA Is Calculated at WMU
GPA is calculated by dividing total honor points earned by total credit hours attempted; a course's honor points equal its credit hours multiplied by the grade's honor-point value. Classes taken credit/no credit do not affect the GPA.
For a repeated course, only the most recent grade counts toward the GPA — unless a letter grade was earned on the first attempt and the repeat resulted in W, CR, or NC, in which case the original letter grade remains in the GPA. Graduate students may not repeat a course more than once during their graduate career, except courses approved as repeatable for credit.

Academic Probation and Dismissal at WMU
Undergraduates are warned when a semester GPA falls below 2.00 while the cumulative GPA stays at 2.00 or above, and placed on probation once the cumulative GPA itself drops below 2.00. A student who posts another sub-2.00 semester GPA while on probation moves through extended and then final probation before academic dismissal; dismissed undergraduates may not re-enroll for at least one full 15-week semester.
Graduate students follow the same warning/probation/extended-probation/final-probation/dismissal progression, but against a 3.00 threshold instead of 2.00, and may not re-enroll for at least one full 15-week semester or two 7.5-week sessions after dismissal.

Undergraduates earn Cum Laude at a GPA of 3.50–3.69, Magna Cum Laude at 3.70–3.89, and Summa Cum Laude at 3.90–4.00, provided at least 30 semester hours of letter-graded WMU coursework are counted into the final cumulative GPA.
Dean's List requires at least 12 semester hours of letter-graded work and a 3.50 GPA in a fall or spring semester, or at least 6 semester hours and a 3.50 GPA in a Summer I or Summer II session.
