Grade Notations

Beyond the letter grades, UM-Dearborn transcripts use several notations that carry no honor points and are not counted in the GPA: NC (No Credit, specially approved courses only), I (Incomplete), Y (course extends beyond the term; lapses to E if not completed), NR (Grade Not Reported), W (Official Withdrawal), and VI (Visitor/Official Audit).

In specially approved S/E and S/U graded courses, a pass is recorded as S (not counted in the GPA); a fail is recorded as E or U. A student who stops attending without officially dropping receives UE (Unearned Fail), which is computed in the GPA the same as an E.

How GPA Is Calculated

Grade point averages are computed by dividing the honor points a student has earned by the hours elected, calculated at both the term and cumulative level.

A course may be repeated no more than two times; every grade remains on the transcript, but only the last grade earned counts toward the GPA.

Under the Pass/Fail option, grades A through C- post as P (Pass) and grades D+ through E post as F (Fail); neither P nor F is counted in the GPA, and no honor points are awarded for Pass/Fail coursework. The option is open only to students not on academic probation, and at most four Pass/Fail courses may count toward a degree.
