How the GPA Is Calculated

The grade-point average is calculated by dividing the total grade points earned by the total hours attempted. Grades of "I," "NP," "P," "S," "U," "W," "R," "SR," or "UR," and marks of "AU" or "N," do not affect the GPA. Developmental courses, physical education activity (leisure) courses, and certain repeated or reprieved/renewed courses are also excluded.

OSU calculates several separate GPAs: the Overall GPA (all OSU and transfer courses), the Total Institution GPA (OSU courses only), the Total Transfer GPA (transfer courses only), and the Current Term GPA (a single term).

Academic Notice, Probation and Suspension

Undergraduates must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 1.70 through 30 attempted hours, and 2.00 at 31 or more hours, to remain in good standing. Falling below this threshold places a student on probation for one semester; the student must then post a 2.00 current-term GPA or meet the minimum overall standard to continue. First-year students (30 or fewer hours) with an overall GPA between 1.70 and 2.00 are placed on academic notice rather than probation.

A student on probation is suspended if their current-term GPA falls below 2.00 while their overall GPA remains below the same 1.70/2.00 thresholds. A suspended student may not be readmitted until one regular semester has elapsed, and may be readmitted only once.

Grade-Point Average and Hours Required for Graduation

An overall GPA of 2.00 or higher is required for graduation, in addition to a 2.00 or higher GPA in the major or minor fields. No degree program may require fewer than 120 semester credit hours, with at least 40 hours of upper-division coursework and at least 30 hours in the major field (15 of which must be upper-division). Students must earn at least 30 semester credit hours in residence at OSU, including 15 of the final 30 hours or 50% of the upper-division major hours.

Honor Rolls and Graduation Distinction

Full-time undergraduates completing at least 12 earned OSU hours in a fall or spring term with a 4.00 current-term GPA are placed on the President's List of Distinguished Students; a term GPA of 3.50 or higher with no grade below "C" earns a place on the Dean's List of Distinguished Students.

Graduation distinction is based on the final overall GPA: 3.90-4.00 earns Summa Cum Laude, 3.80-3.89 Magna Cum Laude, and 3.70-3.79 Cum Laude. The GPA used for this determination is truncated to two decimal places.

Transfer Credit Policy

Credit transferred from other accredited four-year institutions applies toward a degree the same way it would if earned at OSU, but transfer credit may not satisfy more than half of a department's major course requirements without approval. Community college credit is accepted only toward lower-division (1000- and 2000-level) requirements, and at least 60 semester credit hours must be earned at a senior college. Credit from international institutions is accepted based on U.S. letter-grade equivalents for the grading method used in that country of study.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at OSU?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at OSU?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Oklahoma State University (OSU) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
