Grade Notations Beyond A–F
Besides the A–F letter grades, YSU records several notations that carry no quality-point value. An Incomplete (I) may be assigned when a student has completed more than 60% of a course but, for justifiable reasons beyond their control, cannot finish the remaining work; if not resolved by the applicable deadline (March 1 for fall courses, September 1 for spring, October 1 for summer), or by the time of graduation, it automatically converts to an F. A Progress (PR) grade applies to approved multi-term projects or competency-based courses and likewise converts to F if not resolved by its deadline. A Withdrawal (W) is recorded for a properly processed withdrawal after the 14th day of a fall or spring semester (7th day of a summer session) through the 60% point of the term; withdrawing after that point, or failing to follow the official withdrawal process, results in an F instead. An Audit (AU) requires meeting the instructor's attendance requirement or it converts to AU(W).

How YSU Calculates the GPA
The grade point average is the total quality points earned divided by the total GPA hours attempted; only grades of A, B, C, D, and F are included in this calculation. The GPA is computed to two decimal places by truncation, not rounding — for example, a GPA of 2.999 is recorded as 2.99, not 3.00.
A course may be repeated (twice, or more with a dean's authorization); for GPA recalculation, only the highest grade and its credit hours count toward the cumulative GPA, program GPA, and credit-hour totals, though every attempt remains on the official transcript. Only coursework completed at YSU qualifies for GPA recalculation, and students who have already earned a bachelor's degree are ineligible.
Under the Traditional Grade/No-Credit (A,B,C/NC) option, a grade of C or better earns credit; otherwise an NC is recorded, which does not affect the GPA. Under the student-option Credit/No-Credit (CR/NC) policy — available to undergraduates with 15+ semester hours and a 2.00+ cumulative GPA, or transfer students with 30+ transfer hours — up to 12 semester hours (6 for an associate degree) may be taken CR/NC; an A, B, or C earns CR and a D or F earns NC, and neither affects the GPA.

Graduation Honors and GPA Recalculation
Grades of D or F that were excluded from GPA calculations through the recalculation (course-repeat) process are still counted when determining eligibility for graduation honors.
