Grading marks beyond letter grades
Final grades are recorded on Academica and are not mailed to students. Alongside letter grades, the University uses several non-GPA marks: P/N (Passed/Not Passed program), I (Incomplete, must be resolved within one calendar year or it converts to F), W (Withdrawal), Y (Deferred, for work such as a thesis or dissertation that continues beyond the semester), and Z (Auditor). An R notation historically marked an earlier attempt of a repeated course.

How the GPA is computed
Grade point average is computed by multiplying the grade points assigned to each course grade by the number of credits for that course, adding the results, and dividing by the total number of credits attempted.
Excluded from the GPA computation: credit by special examination, transfer credit, and any course graded I, W, S, U, M, P, or N.
For courses repeated from Fall Term 2006 to the present, only the most recent attempt's grade and credits count toward the GPA; a student may not attempt the same class more than four times, and advisor or department-chair permission is required for a third or fourth attempt respectively.

Academic probation
An undergraduate student whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.00 is placed on Academic Probation and may register only after consultation with, and approval from, a designated University advisor. A student is given two subsequent terms to raise their cumulative GPA to at least 2.00; failing that, the student is excluded from their program and may not apply for readmission or reinstatement for one calendar year.

Transfer credit and the GPA
No transfer grades apply in computing a Wayne State grade point average — only credits transfer in, not grades. Courses from regionally accredited institutions must have been completed with a grade of C or higher to transfer in. Junior standing is awarded once a student has accumulated fifty-six or more transferable semester credits, whether transferred or earned at Wayne State.
