Grade Symbols and Repeated Courses

Several symbols appear on an MGA transcript alongside letter grades but are not counted in the GPA: I (Incomplete), IP (In Progress), W (Withdrawal without penalty), WM (Withdrew, military emergency), V (Audit), K (credit by Advanced Standing or CLEP exam), and NR (grade not reported). WF (Withdrew Failed, assigned after the withdrawal deadline or beyond the 5-withdrawal limit) is the exception: it is counted the same as an F in the GPA.

When a student repeats a course at MGA, the cumulative GPA is calculated using the highest grade earned; earlier attempts remain on the official record but are excluded from the GPA. Students who fail a class may retake it once more freely; a second failure requires Dean approval to retake again.

How the GPA Is Calculated

The GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of academic credit-hour quality points a student has earned by the total number of GPA hours attempted (graded academic hours, excluding I and W grades).

Academic Standing, Probation, and Suspension

Students must maintain a cumulative institutional GPA of 2.00 or higher to remain in Good Standing. A student whose cumulative institutional GPA falls below 2.00 is placed on Academic Probation, and remains on Probation as long as that semester's Term GPA is 2.00 or higher.

A student on Probation who fails to bring the cumulative GPA to 2.00 and whose Term GPA is also below 2.00 is suspended. The first suspension is for one term (fall, spring, or summer); a subsequent suspension is for one year (three terms). After a third suspension, a student is not eligible for readmission until able to meet an overall cumulative 2.00 GPA (transfer plus institutional).

Graduation GPA Requirement

Applicants for graduation must present a graduation GPA of at least 2.00 on all courses used to meet graduation requirements, and a minimum institutional GPA of 2.00.

Dean's List, President's List, and Graduation Honors

A student who earns a semester GPA of 3.50 or above on at least 12 semester hours, with a cumulative institutional GPA of 2.50 or higher, is placed on the Dean's List. A semester GPA of 3.80 or above under the same conditions, with a cumulative institutional GPA of 3.00 or higher, earns the President's List.

Graduation honors require at least 50% of coursework completed at MGA and a cumulative institutional GPA of at least 3.50: Cum Laude 3.50–3.69, Magna Cum Laude 3.70–3.89, Summa Cum Laude 3.90–4.00.

Transfer Credit Policy

MGA accepts credit from institutionally accredited colleges and universities for undergraduate courses with a final grade of C or higher (a D may be considered through the credit appeal procedure). Credits earned in a quarter system are converted to semester hours by multiplying quarter credits by 0.667.

Grades earned in transfer courses are not reflected in a student's MGA institutional GPA, though they are reflected in the cumulative overall GPA and shown on the transcript; transfer coursework is also not considered for graduation honors. A grade of K (credit by standardized exam, e.g. AP/CLEP/DSST/IB) carries no GPA value. Students must earn at least 25% of degree credit hours through direct instruction at MGA.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save my semesters and track my CGPA at MGA?
Yes. After you calculate a semester's GPA, click "Save as semester" to add it to the built-in CGPA tracker, which then computes your cumulative GPA across every saved semester using the standard weighted formula (Σ SGPA × credits ÷ Σ credits). You can save semesters by course (full breakdown) or quick-add a past semester with just the SGPA and credit hours. Locking, renaming, and deleting saved semesters are all supported, and the tracker shows a running CGPA plus a trend arrow versus your previous semester.
How do I convert SGPA to CGPA at MGA?
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of every semester's SGPA. The formula is: CGPA = (SGPA₁ × credits₁ + SGPA₂ × credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × creditsₙ) ÷ (credits₁ + credits₂ + … + creditsₙ). On this page, add each semester to the CGPA tracker (either by course or as a quick SGPA + credit-hours entry) and the calculator runs the conversion for you on every save, edit, and delete — no manual arithmetic required.
Can I add past semester GPAs without entering every course?
Yes. On the My CGPA Tracker tab, click "Add semester" and choose the quick-add option. You enter just the SGPA and the credit hours for that semester — no course-by-course breakdown required. It works as a GPA calculator with previous semesters support, or as a GPA calculator without course details when you only remember the SGPA from your transcript. Quick-added and course-by-course semesters can be mixed freely; both contribute to your CGPA using the same credit-weighted formula.
Is my CGPA tracker data sent to your servers?
No. Your saved semesters are stored locally in your browser only — nothing is transmitted to GPAWise. A "Clear all tracker data" button is always available on the tracker tab to wipe the data on demand.
Is this Middle Georgia State University (MGA) GPA calculator free?
Yes — GPAWise is completely free to use. There's no signup, no paywall, and your inputs stay in your browser.
